S. J. Carlton Passes Away. Samuel J. Carlton of Carp Lake died Thursday morning at Little Traverse Hospital in Petoskey. Mr. Carlton was 83 years old. He was born on March 13, 1875 at Walkerton, Ontario. He was the oldest son of Mr. and Mrs. George Carlton, who moved to Emmet county when he was 4 years old. He has lived in Emmet county nearly all of his life. On May 3, 1898, he married Rebilo [sic] Cope. They opened the Carlton Hotel at Levering, and operated this for a number of years, They opened the Wayside Inn at Carp Lake in 1925, which they operated until their retirement in 1945. Mr. Carlton was a member of the Levering Methodist Church, taking an active part, as choir leader and superintendent of the Sunday school. Survivors are his wife; one sister Mrs. Catherine Schmalzried of Levering, one brother George J. Carlton of Mackinaw City, and several nieces and nephews. The funeral will be held at the Levering Methodist Church Saturday afternoon at 2 o'clock, Rev. John Miller officiating. Burial will be in the Carp Lake Cemetery. The body is at the Stone Funeral Home in Petoskey, where friends may call until Saturday morning. The body will then be removed to the Levering church and lie in state there from 10:30 untill time of service.
