      Obituary:
Nancy Hendricks Hoar, 96, of Sumter and formerly of Arlington, Va., died Friday, May 27, 2011, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center after a brief illness.
Born on Jan. 19, 1915, in Delta, Colo., she was the daughter of the late Crosby Arthur Hoar and Margaret Hendricks Hoar. She grew up in both Minnesota and Wisconsin.
Miss Hoar was a retired employee of the CIA in the Washington, D.C., area. During World War II, she went to Sri Lanka, then called Ceylon, to work for the O.S.S., the forerunner of the CIA. She was a former national president of the Women's Overseas Service League, an organization similar to the American Legion.
She was a graduate of Milwaukee Downer, which became part of Lawrence University.
As a resident of Arlington, from the 1930s through the 1980s, she was a member of St. Andrew's Episcopal Church and became a key volunteer for the Washington Bach Consort, a professional chorus, and also the Smithsonian. She moved to Sumter in the early 1990s to be near her brother, the late John S. Hoar, and his family.
In Sumter, she was a lay reader at the Episcopal Church of the Holy Comforter, where she was a member of the Daughters of the King and had previously served on the Alter Guild. She was also a member of the Pilot Club.
Miss Hoar is survived by a niece, Nancy Hoar Cannarella of Sumter; two nephews, Stephen Warren Hoar of Raleigh, N.C., and Robert Crosby Hoar of Nashville, Tenn.; and several grand-nieces and grand-nephews. Also surviving are two devoted caregivers, Sarah Smith and Doristeen Lloyd.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her brother, John S. Hoar; and sister-in-law Julia W. Hoar.
Memorial services will be held at 3 p.m. Tuesday at the Episcopal Church of the Holy Comforter with the Rev. Marcus Kaiser officiating.
The family will receive friends following the service in the Parish Hall and other times at the home of her niece, 24 Park Ave.
Memorials may be sent to the Episcopal Church of the Holy Comforter, 213 N. Main Street, Sumter, SC 29150.
