Education: Cane Hill College
Note: James was educated at Cane Hill College and then taught in Oklahoma at various times for 48 terms. As a Surveyer he and his brother, Peter Russell Bates, assisted in secioning Kansas and lived two years at Mound City. But the influence of John Brown caused so much fighting in that Region, the Bates family returned to their farm home near Cincinnati, AR. He taught 22 terms in Arkansas but quit teaching in 1902, and in 1917 he was operating a hotel in Westville, OK.
