Hi Roz,
To answer your question: "For my records, please, who was Ellen married to in the 1900 census?"
Ellen was married to John Henry Rankin about 1887. In the 1880 census, she is still living with George and Margaret Cassidy. By the 1900 census, this record indicates that John and Ellen had been married for 13 years and there are no children. The 1910 census shows John married to Amanda Varndell and they were my great-grandparents. As I recall, they were married about 1903. It was a real surprise to learn that John had been married before. My aunt remembers hearing something about a previous marriage when she was little, but she never knew her grandfather and no one either knew who John had been married to or talked about it.
John's parents were Alexander and Nancy (Hart) Rankin. When you look through the years at Wharton Twp, Fayette County, PA census records, I'm sure all these family knew each other and obviously lived in close proximity to one another.
I'm still amazed at having found info on Ellen. With the various race designations and such a common surname as Cassidy, I was hitting a lot of brick walls. Finding your info has been really helpful. At least now Ellen will not be lost in history.
