      Obituary:
      Times Argus, The (Montpelier-Barre, VT) - January 12, 2006
      Deceased Name: James Daniel Horan
MONTPELIER - James Daniel Horan, died peacefully at the Arbors in Shelburne, on Tuesday, Jan. 10.
He was born in Detroit, Mich., on Nov. 22, 1925, the fifth child of Helen and Michael Hoar. In 1943, at the age of 17 and the day after his high school graduation, Jim joined the U.S. Navy and served in North Africa, Italy and France.
Returning home, he attended the University of Detroit, graduating in 1948 with a degree in business. Most of his career was spent in the machine tool industry. He worked for Whitman & Barnes, United Greenfield Corporation and Vermont American Corporation as a salesman, sales manager and finally as president of Vermont Tap & Die. He was a past president of the American Society of Machine Manufacturers and the Cutting Tool Association of America.
Jim and Patricia Ann Phelan married in Detroit on April 16, 1955, and spent their 50 years of marriage in Dallas, Boston and Connecticut before moving to Montpelier where they have lived happily since 1970. Jim was active in the Society of St. Vincent de Paul throughout his life, and loved the game of golf, even if golf didn't always love him in return.
In addition to his wife Pat, Jim is survived by his daughter, Dr. Mary Horan, and her partner Karen McGaffey of Seattle, Wash.; Maureen Horan White, her husband Jeff and sons Brendan and Cedric of Rutland; Dr. John Horan, his wife Ann and daughters Callan and Amelia of Austin, Texas; Catherine Horan, her husband Will Jackson and daughters Laura and Julia of Seattle, Wash.; James Horan and his wife Meghan Masco Horan of Portland, Ore.; and sister Peggy Burke of Grosse Pointe, Mich. Jim also leaves a legacy of wonderful family, friends and business associates throughout the country, but most especially at home in Montpelier.
Calling hours will be at the Barber & Lanier Funeral Home in Montpelier on Friday evening, Jan. 13, between 7 and 9. A funeral Mass will be held at St. Augustine's Parish in Montpelier, Saturday, Jan. 14, at 1 p.m.
In lieu of flowers, Jim's family requests donations to the Alzheimer's Association of Vermont. Their gratitude is extended to Sylvia Larrabee who helped greatly with Jim's care while at home, and to the wonderful and loving staff of the Arbors.
