Deceased Name: Raye Plahn
of Shell Lake, died on Friday, Aug. 25, 2006, at Terraceview Living Center in Shell Lake.
She was born on Sept. 25, 1903, in Bashaw Valley to Frank and Anna (Peaslee) Keeler. She lived in the town of Crystal in Washburn County until the age of 9. She was then raised in Shell Lake and graduated from Shell Lake High School in 1921. Raye attended Superior Normal School for two years, graduating in 1925. She taught school for seven years ' in the town of Crystal for one year, Sarona for one year, Cameron for two years, and Chicago Heights for three years.
She was married in Duluth on June 25, 1930, to Oran Plahn, and had lived in Shell Lake since then.
Oran preceded her in death on Nov. 17, 1990. She was also preceded in death by her parents; her stepmother, Catherine Blake; three sisters, Jean Hoar, Lucretia James, and Louise Keeler; and two brothers, Lewis and Frank Keeler.
Raye was an active member of Shell Lake United Methodist Church and Omega Circle, the Order of Eastern Star, and Tuesday Club and was a Red Cross volunteer and a volunteer at the Shell Lake hospital and Washburn County Historical Society.
She is survived by one son, John (Susan) of Mound, Minn.; one daughter, Mary (J. W.) Newbold of Chatsworth, Calif.; four grandchildren, John, Sarah, Julie, and Jennifer; five great-grandchildren; and one half-sister, Sara Leahy, of Chatsworth, Calif.
The funeral will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Tuesday, Aug. 29, at United Methodist Church, Shell Lake. Rev. Charles Wendt will officiate.
Burial of cremains will be in Shell Lake Cemetery.
Funeral arrangements are being handled by Pockat Funeral Home of Shell Lake.
