Loar, 88, of Manhattan, died Thursday, April 19 at the Mercy Regional Health Center in Manhattan. Some of the following information was provided by his family. Melvin was born Jan. 21, 1919 in Orleans, Ind., the son of Walter E. and Bertha (Baker) Hoar. He was a structural engineer for various aeronautical companies throughout the United States. He retired from the Northrop Grumman Corporation in California in 1984. He had been a Manhattan resident since July 2006, and was a member of the University Christian Church. He was married to Alice L. Johnson on Nov. 23, 1949 in Columbus, Ohio. She survives of the home. He is also survived by one daughter, Marcia Messer and her husband, John, of Alta Vista; one son, Raymond Loar and his wife, Sandra, of Austin, Texas; one sister, Iris Hodgin, of Orleans, Ind.; and ten grandchildren, Thomas Loar, and Philip, Daniel, Alicia, Andrew, Charisa, Elizabeth, Rachel, Joel and Anna Messer. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, April 28 at the Yorgensen-Meloan-Londeen Funeral Chapel with pastor David Pape officiating. Interment will follow in the Moss Springs Cemetery near Alta Vista. The family will receive friends during a visitation from 7 to 8 p.m. Friday at the funeral home.
