      Obituary of Edmund Giles:
      Published Date: 1890-10-18
      Newspaper: Saturday Morning Citizen
Obituary - Mr. Edmund Giles a worthy and respected citizen died quite suddenly of heart disease on Sunday last at his long-time home at the corner of Cabot and Pleasant streets, at the advanced age 75 years, 2 months. Although not latterly of robust health, he wasconstantly out and about and interested in the affairs of life, being atthe shoe store of his son Edmund Giles Jr., in Odd Fellows Block, until late in the evening before his death. The deceased leaves a life record of good citizenship, and comes of a long line of old time settlers of Beverly; his earliest Gile ancestor in this country was Edward, who settled in Salem, where his son John was married and had one son born there, the mother of that son dying, John the father sold his estate in Salem and married Elizabeth, widow of Osman Trask and daughter of John Gally of Beverly, where he settled, and had a son Eleazer who married Lydia daughter of Edmund Grover; and they had Edmund who married Esther Ellingwood, whose son Edmund married Sarah Smith and their son Edmund married Jane Wallis and these were the parents of the recent deceased. John Gally owned quite an estate on both sides of Hale street including portions of the Bancroft estate, part of the common with the Harris estate and a large
part of the cemetery, to Gally's bridge, and his Giles heirs had most of his estate. A daughter of his was Dorcas widow of Sexton William Hoar and she was one of those who was imprisoned on account of witchcraft, but released after several months confinement there, on account of which her heirs received some indemnity from the State for expenses incurredon that account. Jane Wallis the mother of the deceased was a daughter of Ebenezer and Jane Carrico Wallis of Wallis street. His earliest ancestor
of the Wallis race was Nathaniel from Cornwall, England, and his other ancestors were of Stone, Cressy and other honored Beverly names.
