The following is the biography of Catherine Horr written by Robert Linn Clare in 1958.
Catherine Walsh Horr
She was born in Portsmouth, Virginia in 1855. Her mother died at the time of her birth so she was left in the care of her Grandmother, Mrs. Fanny Walsh, until her father was able to properly care for her.
Her father, Philip H. Horr, went to Portsmouth, Ohio where he met and married Mathilda Wilhelm in 1856. The baby Catherine then was taken by the father and stepmother to live with them in Ironton, Ohio about 1857. She remained with them until the early death of her father in 1864. She was then nine years old and had three half-brothers, William, Harry and Newton, and a baby half-sister Anna.
Her widowed stepmother, Mathilda, then with five young children to raise and no means of support, was forced to send Catherine back to her Grandmother Walsh in Portsmouth, Virginia.
Catherine lived there until about 1890 when she again went to Ohio to live with her half-sister Anna (Mrs. J. R. Clare in Portsmouth. She lived with Anna's family until 1908, then when Anna and her family moved to Columbus, Ohio, Catherine again moved to live with her half-brother Newton's family. She lived with them until her death from cancer in 1930. She is buried in the Horr family plot in Greenlawn Cemetery, Portsmouth, Ohio.
Catherine's life could not have been a happy one. She was moved from family to family with little regard to her feelings and through no fault of her own. She never married.
