      Succeeded as 5th baronet on the death of his uncle 10 January 1857. Liberal +
      M.P. for Windsor (1865-6) and for Chelsea (1868-74). J.P. for Wiltshire and +
      D.L. for Somerset. A partner in Messrs Hoare's bank in Fleet St, London, but +
      left in 1848 under a cloud because of his gambling. Sold many Stourhead +
      heirlooms to meet expenses in 1883, and closed up the house in 1884. He was an +
      active and sociable man who spent much time abroad. He had at least two +
      illegitimate childrenby Harriet Ann COOK and Emma ARNOLD who were +
      unacknowledged. Taken ill in Nice, France in January 1894, he returned to die +
      at Eaton Place, London. BLC; lists his catalogue of 'Stourhead heirlooms'.
