      Deceased Name: Anna Ellen Willis, 91
      Anna Ellen Willis, 91, of Bay Township, died July 11, 2011, at her home surrounded by her loving family.
      Anna was born at home on April 26, 1920, in Burt Lake, the daughter of Harvey and Elizabeth Griswold and was raised in the Burt Lake area, attending the Country School and Pellston Schools.
      Following school, Anna worked as a nurses aide at the Lockwood Hospital in Petoskey, which is where she met Wendell Willis. On Oct. 31, 1942, Anna married Wendell in Rolla, Mo., and together they made their home in Bay Township. Anna stayed at home for a time raising her children, but later went to work at Boyne Products, now United Technologies, and continued to work there for more than 25 years. Following her retirement, she worked for Honeywell Security for a time as a security guard.
      Anna was an active person, and always had a helping heart. She volunteered at the senior center in Charlevoix and worked as a transporter for the Department of Human Services. She was a member of the Grand Traverse Band of Ottawa and Chippewa Indians and enjoyed crafts, baking and decorating cakes, and traveling.
      She is survived by four children, Dick (Pat) Willis, Carol Willis, Ron (Cindy) Willis, and John Willis; a sister, Mary Hoar of Laingsburg, Mich.; a brother, Harvey Griswold of Ohio; four grandsons; one granddaughter; nine great-grandchildren; and by many nieces and nephews.
      She was preceded in death by her husband, Wendell, in 1990; a daughter, Joyce; and by three brothers, Robert, Jim, and Sam; and by three sisters, Julia, Mabel, Ellen.
      The funeral service will be 10 a.m. Friday, July 15, at the Stone Funeral Home in Petoskey. The family will receive friends at the funeral home from 6-8 p.m. on Thursday, July 14. Burial will be in the Dyer Cemetery in Bay Township.
      Memorial donations in Anna's memory may be directed to Hospice of Northwest Michigan, the Boyne Area Medical Center or a charity of choice.

      Deceased Name: GRISWOLD
      GRISWOLD, Sam William - Of Flushing and Burt Lake (Brutus, MI), age 84, died Sunday, July 29, 2001 at McLaren Regional Medical Center. Funeral services will be held 1 p.m. Wednesday, August 1, 2001 at Rossell Funeral Home, Pastor Carl Petty will officiate. Military services will follow under the auspices of V.F.W. Post #5666. Cremation will follow services. Visitation will be 11 a.m. until time of services. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to V.F.W. Post #5666 or Heritage Baptist Church. Mr. Griswold was born in Brutus, MI December 18, 1916, the son of Harvey and Elizabeth (Martell) Griswold. He was married to Freda Congleton who preceded him in death in 1993 after 46 years of marriage. He later married Dolores (Schlothauer) Cheely March 14, 1998. Mr. Griswold was a star basketball player for Pellston High School. He played in the state basketball finals. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II in the European Theatre. He was awarded the Purple Heart and a Silver Star from General Mark Clark. Mr. Griswold owned and operated Advanced Cleaning Service in Flint for over 30 years, retiring in 1999. He loved spending time at Burt Lake. Surviving are: wife, Dolores Griswold of Flushing; daughter, Sheryl and husband Joe Newman of Flint; 8 stepchildren; 2 grandsons, Jason J. and wife Stephanie Skym of Minot AFB, ND, Justin D. and wife Amber Skym of Flint; 1 great-granddaughter, Samantha Skym; numerous step-grandchildren and step-great-grandchildren; 2 sisters, Anna Willis of Boyne City, MI, Mary Hoar of Owosso; brother, Harvey Griswold of Marion, OH. Mr. Griswold was preceded in death by 5 brothers and sisters; and 2 stepsons.
