Georgia Pangborn, whose mother was Elizabeth (Hoar) Schmalzried, wrote a paper which she entitled "Hoar Family History" some time in the 1950's. She had lived all of her life in the Levering, Michigan area and was personally acquainted with most of the Hoar family members who lived in the vicinity of Levering. We begin this collection of Hoar family material with her paper.

    HOAR FAMILY HISTORY
    Written by Georgia (Schmalzried) Pangborn
John Hoar was born in England, May 24th 1836. His father was Samuel Hoar, and his mother was Elizabeth Bunsell Hoar. Samuel Hoar was a sailor and engaged on a Man of War vessel. He and Great grand mother came to Canada with their children and there John Hoar married Caroline Wakefield, Feb. 26, 1862. Caroline Wakefield was also born in England, May 1st, 1843 and had come to Canada with her parents as a young girl. Her fathers name was Thomas Wakefield.
To John and Caroline Hoar were born eight children, Elizabeth (my mother), January 23rd, 1863, Henry, Andrew, Hannah, Emma Jane, Mary Ann, Maude and Ralph.
Their home was a farm, near Walkerton Ont. Can., until about 1871 when Grandfather Hoar decided to move to North Carolina. They left their pleasant home in Can., much against Grandmother's wishes and sound judgement, and went into N. C. The effects of the Civil war were still so acute and poverty was on every side. So, being unfamiliar with crops and climate Grandfather was very unsuccessful, and was soon ready to move.
In 1876 they came to Michigan. Arriving by boat at Cross Village, they found the dock washed out, so had to come ashore in rowboats (manned by Indians). Two other families came with them, Stephen Cosens and Henry Luesings, and it must have been with many misgivings that these women climbed the steep bank, with their babies in their arms, to the boarding house, which was run by a Frenchman named McTeavy.
After staying a few days they walked to a small cabin about four miles from the Village, where they lived for four weeks.
The men had in the meantime gone to Traverse City, where they had taken out proper papers for homesteading claims, and the three families started their homes just East of the Village. Here they built their cabins, cleared land, made fences and put down wells, only to be told at the end of one and a half years, that a mistake had been made, and they would have to move. The Luesings and Cosens then went into Bliss Township, while the Hoars settled in Center Township on new homesteads.
A very substantial log home was built and things progressing in quite a satisfactory manner when my Grandfather was struck by a falling timber and died in a few hours. This was Dec. 4, 1883.
However, Grandmother was not completely dismayed, and, with her family, worked on. My mother as a very small girl worked in boarding houses both in Harbor Springs and Cross Village. Very little schooling was obtainable, but they got what there was in the little country school.
I have often heard Mother tell of walking from their home to Harbor Springs, a distance of 14 miles; and a walk to Cross Village to work (for one dollar per week) was taken in the course of events. However, mother made many friends and was happy.
One small item stands out in memory. While working at Harbor Springs she bought barrel of apples and accompanied them by stage to within a mile and a half of home, hurrying home on foot to tell the family, and how quickly the brothers ran with their cart to haul home the barrell.
Eleven years after Grandfather's death, Grandmother returned to Canada and married a man she had known in girlhood, George Cooper. She lived there until he died. At that time he was considered wealthy, and as I recall, her share, among brothers, sisters and children (by a former marriage) was around 10,000 dollars. She returned to Michigan to be near her children.
My mother married George Schmalzried when she was twenty-four, and although life was filled with hard work, sickness, hardship, a large family and the death of three children, mother maintained a true English courage and fortitude. Always rising above circumstances and making the most of what she had. Dressing her children neatly in garments made from clothes given her. Although I do remember, perhaps my first boughten dress. Sometimes I feel that my unusual love for red dresses goes back to my first red dress. A few dozen eggs had been brought to town and in making her purchases, mother found a remnant of red calico. Three yards at 3 cents per yard. She decided that as one dozen eggs brought 12 cemts she could afford to buy that piece of material. True, it was narrow, but by piecing out with narrow strips of black, it would do. I am certain that no dress in my life ever brought the joy of that one, and although I have had dozens of red dresses, I never buy one without thinking of my first, the one my mother made with nine cents worth of material.
Dad was a gentle, quiet, man while mother was quick, sharp, and determined. There were six of we children, Earl, Anna, Della, Ethel, Georgia (myself), and Lyle, and we owe much to both our parents. Dad bequeathed us the sweetness, (that none of us seem to possess), and mother gave us the urge and ambition, that in her expression would "keep our heads above water".
Mother died in my home April 13th 1949 after a long illness.
