The following is the biography of Philip Henry Horr written by Robert Linn Clare in 1958.

    Philip Henry Horr (Hore)

He was born August 18, 1826 in the county of Cornwall, St. Austell Parish, England of a large and not too prosperous family.

He came to America in 1848 at the invitation of an uncle who had migrated to Richmond, Virginia and prospered but was childless. He did not get along too well with this uncle, left him and secured a job in the Portsmouth Navy Yard near Norfolk, Virginia.

He became a citizen November 17, 1851. (See His diary)

In Norfolk, he met and married Catherine Walsh in 1854. She died in childbirth one year later, leaving him with an infant daughter, Catherine.

He was forced to leave the baby, Catherine, with her grandmother, Mrs. Fanny Walsh, in Portsmouth, Virginia, while he moved westward to Portsmouth, Ohio. (See his letter to Mrs. Walsh dated September 17, 1855). Here he was given the position of managing two shops of Murray & Moore's Machine Works, one in Portsmouth and one in Ironton, Ohio.

While in Portsmouth, Ohio, he met and married Matilda Wilhelm on September 26, 1856, the Rev. B. Spahr officiating.

They went to Ironton to live and there three of their children were born; William, Harry and Newton, the latter two being twins. They lived there for four years to 1860. they also had the girl, Catherine, living with them.

Failing health (tuberculosis) necessitated his giving up his work in Ironton and seeking a higher and healthier climate in Zlaeski, Ohio, where he was placed in charge of newly erected charcoal iron furnace. His health seemed to improve and he was planning a trip to England with his family to see his parents and possibly stay there. His health took a turn for the worse and he died suddenly on February 27, 1864 when he was only 38 years old.

The forth child of this union, a daughter Anna, was born there in Zaleski several months after his death.

The daughter, Catherine, by his former marriage had to be sent back to Portsmouth, Virginia to live with her Grandmother Walsh again. She was then nine years old. In later life, when about thirty-five years old, this Catherine returned to Portsmouth, Ohio and lived with her half-sister Anna Horr Clare to help her raise her young growing family.

Philip's widow Matilda and her four young children moved back to Portsmouth, Ohio in 1865 to live in her former home with her mother Amanda Melvina Wilhelm, who also was a widow.

Philip did not have much of a formal education but he was very intelligent, industrious and an avid reader. He was self taught and knew geometry, mechanics and machine design. He also was a serious student of history and had a complete leather bound set of histories of both England and America.

He was deeply religious and a regular attendant at church.

He died while still a relatively young man (only thirty-eight) but his life had been crowded with much activity, considerable grief and many responsibilities.

His picture with the infant daughter, Catherine, is attached, also a very interesting letter written to his first wife's mother in 1855. His personal diary describing his early days in the United States is available. It is in the hands of Robert J. Horr, grandson, now living in Palo Alto, California.

An interesting story related by Philip's daughter, Catherine, of her father is as follows: "He was extremely proud of his athletic prowess and that his speciality was broad jumping with weights. He was considered an undisputed champion at this. One day a newcomer beat him. He was so infuriated that he swore to beat him if it killed him. He did beat him and it did kill him. He died suddenly of an internal hemmorage caused by a torn lung tissue."

The following is the biography of Catherine Horr written by Robert Linn Clare in 1958.

    Catherine Walsh Horr

She was born in Portsmouth, Virginia in 1855. Her mother died at the time of her birth so she was left in the care of her Grandmother, Mrs. Fanny Walsh, until her father was able to properly care for her.

Her father, Philip H. Horr, went to Portsmouth, Ohio where he met and married Mathilda Wilhelm in 1856. The baby Catherine then was taken by the father and stepmother to live with them in Ironton, Ohio about 1857. She remained with them until the early death of her father in 1864. She was then nine years old and had three half-brothers, William, Harry and Newton, and a baby half-sister Anna.

Her widowed stepmother, Mathilda, then with five young children to raise and no means of support, was forced to send Catherine back to her Grandmother Walsh in Portsmouth, Virginia.

Catherine lived there until about 1890 when she again went to Ohio to live with her half-sister Anna (Mrs. J. R. Clare in Portsmouth. She lived with Anna's family until 1908, then when Anna and her family moved to Columbus, Ohio, Catherine again moved to live with her half-brother Newton's family. She lived with them until her death from cancer in 1930. She is buried in the Horr family plot in Greenlawn Cemetery, Portsmouth, Ohio.

Catherine's life could not have been a happy one. She was moved from family to family with little regard to her feelings and through no fault of her own. She never married.

Tuesday, March 02, 1897 Portsmouth, Ohio
    W. D. Horr, the Gallia street feed man, had a rather unpleasant experience with a stray bullet Monday evening. He was coming down Washington near Leets plaining mill. Something struck him on the shirt front. It spatted hard and caused him to come to a sudden stop and take a step backward. There was a stinging sensation and abserving the hole 'in the shirt bosom it did not; take Mr.; Horr long to make up his mindJie. had collided with a. spent cartridge ball. Whence it came or who did the shooting are mystnes Mr. Horr cannot explain. He is pretty positive it was not a flobert ball as that would not have penetrated the heavy shirt bosom and caused such a stinging sensation where it touched the skin. He heard no report and saw no one n sight. Who did the shooting?

    Portsmouth Daily Times
    Tuesday , Dec 20, 1910 Portsmouth, Ohio
Chad And Will Horr Bought Out Father
A deal was consummated, onTuesday, whereby the Messrs Chad and Will" Horr become the sole owners of the feed store, owned and conducted for the' past 34 years by their
father, W. D. Horr of Gallia near Gay street. The necessary money was turned over to Mr. Horr, Sr., Tuesday and the firm will hereafter be known as Horr Bros. The many friends of the new owners predict for them the same success that has marked the business career of the retiring member of the firm. W. D. Horr is one of Portsmouth's best and most influential citizens and through his hard work and honest methods he had built up a prosperous business. The year just drawing to a close, was the most successful one since Mr. Horr launched into the feed business 34 years ago. Messrs. Chad and William Horr are to be congratulated upon securing the business, to which both are naturally adapted, having grown up with it. They are industrious, affable and
accomodating and endowed with thrift. That they will maintain the high standards set by their father is a moral certainty W. D. llorr will take, a much needed rest and unless his present plans are upset, he has retired from active business for all time to come, and will spend time looking after his large realty holdings.

The following is the biography of Anna Horr written by Robert Linn Clare in 1962.

    Anna Horr
She was born in Zaleski, Ohio on October 31, 1864.
Her parents, Philip H. and Matilda Wilhelm Horr, had moved to Zaleski (1860) from Ironton, Ohio to get to a more healthful climate as her father was then suffering from tuberculosis.
She never saw her father as he died at age 38, several months before she was born. Her mother, with her four children, three boys and the infant girl, then moved back to her original home in Portsmouth, Ohio at 9 West Fourth Street to live with her widowed mother, Amanda Day Wilhelm (1864).
Her girlhood was spent in this home under somewhat difficult financial conditions. She attended Public Schools and High School and was graduated from High School in 1883.
She married James Robert Clare February 3rd, 1884 and started housekeeping in their home at 8th and Washington Sts., Portsmouth, Ohio. Six children were born to them:
James David, December 18, 1885, died Boston, Mass. September 1937, buried Byers plot, cemetery Washington D.C. He was married to Ruby Byers who died in 1960. Three children.
Alice Bentley, May 1, 1887, not married, Indianapolis, Indiana
Robert Linn, October 18, 1888, married Helen Walsh 1913.
Sarah Ross, September 19, 1890, died pneumonia January 29, 1892, buried Greenlawn Cemetery, Portsmouth, Ohio.
Howard Horr, November 25, 1892, married Ethel Clune 1920, four children, Terre Haute, Indiana.
Doris Hortense, July 28, 1899, married Jas. T. Stewart 1919, two children, died March 9, 1958, buried Crown Hill Cemetery, Indianapolis.
In 1894, they moved into the Clare Homestead at 8th and Chillicothe Sts. to look after her husband's father, whose wife, Sarah Jane, had just died. They lived there ten years, during which time the husband's father J.D. Clare died (1898). They moved back to their original home in 1904 and lived there until 1908, then moved to Columbus, Ohio 19 West Frambies Ave. as her two older boys were then attending Ohio State University there. Their next move was to Indianapolis, Indiana as two of the boys, James and Howard were working there and Linn was in Perth Amboy, N.J. This was in 1914.
Her husband died at their home at 35 West 33rd St. in Indianapolis, Indiana and she continued to live there with one unmarried daughter Alice, until her death from cancer on July 30th, 1938. She is buried in the Clare family plot Greenlawn Cemetery, Portsmouth, Ohio, along with her husband and infant daughter, Sarah.
She was a proud, loving, loyal and wonderful wife and mother, through good times and bad, never complaining and always interested in and ambitious for her husband and children.
The first twenty years of her married life were free of financial worries, as the Clare families were relatively prosperous. Her husband's father, J. D. Clare was considered a successful and wealthy industrialist. Business reverses and the financial depression of 1906 wiped out most of this wealth and her final years were not so easy.
Photographs and letters in her handwriting are attached.
One of her letters written to her son, Linn, on September 22, 1937, is typical of her pride, courage and abiding love in her children. It was written while she was suffering the pain of cancer (she called it arthritis) and it was in regard to the impending death of her first born, James David, from diabetes in Boston, Mass. She died a few months later.
