Richard D. Horr, 67, of North Street died Thursday in Portland.
He was born here, a son of Dana and Anna Malia Horr, and attended Chebeague Island and Portland schools.
For many years, Mr. Horr worked as a rigger and carpenter in the Portland area. He was known as a very caring and helpful man.
Surviving are his wife of 45 years, Barbara (Collins) Horr of Portland; a son, Michael of Windham; four daughters, Barbara Dusablon of Vermont, Diane DeVou of Hollis, Catherine DiPietrantonio of Portland and Patricia Davis of Londonderry, N.H.; four brothers, Jim of Westbrook, Bob, Dana and David, all of Portland; two sisters, Shirley Doughty of Harpswell and Margaret Presnell of Tennessee; nine grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
Visiting hours will be held from 1 to 2 p.m. Tuesday at Hay and Peabody Funeral Home, 749 Congress St., followed by a funeral service at 2 p.m. Burial will be in Forest City Cemetery, South Portland.

The body of a Portland man was plucked from the mouth of Portland Harbor Thursday afternoon, several hours after his wife reported him missing from their North Street home.
Maine State Police said Richard Horr, 67, appeared to have a gunshot wound when he was found in the water about 1:30 p.m. But investigators say the death is not being treated as a homicide.
"At this time, we're going to label this a non-suspicious death, but the official cause will be determined by the Medical Examiner (Friday)," Lt. Dale Lancaster said late Thursday.
A worker at the Gulf Oil Terminal spotted the body in waters near the South Portland side of Portland Harbor, said South Portland Police Chief Edward Googins.
Police were called, as was the U.S. Coast Guard, which pulled the body from the water. Horr's body was placed on a pier owned by Gulf Oil, which operates a tanker off-loading facility and tank farm where the harbor empties into Casco Bay.
The state police mobile crime lab was brought in, photos were taken, and evidence was collected.
But, a key clue to the man's identity came from paperwork.
Investigators culled through missing persons reports and found one filed in Portland that appeared to match the man found in the water.
Lancaster said Barbara Horr reported her husband missing Thursday morning. She last saw her husband the day before, about 9:30 a.m., he said.
Police would not comment on where or how Horr landed in the water, where he was shot or how investigators came to the conclusion the death is not suspicious.
"We're not going to go into that," Lancaster said Thursday night. "There are still some things that need to be looked into."

Obituary:
William F. Horr, 63, of Buxton Road, formerly of Westbrook, died Tuesday at a Portland hospital after a four-month battle with cancer.
Born in Portland, he was a son of Dana and Anna Malia Horr. He attended Portland schools.
Mr. Horr was a self-employed foundation contractor for many years and worked winters at the Rigby Railyard. He also was employed by Nickerson, Allied and Cunningham construction companies.
He was a devoted family man and enjoyed following politics.
Mr. Horr's wife, Martha (Collins) Horr, died in 1971.
He was the longtime companion of Sandra Grant of Saco.
Survivors include three daughters, Mrs. Michael (Jean) Tilton of South Portland, Mrs. Stephen (Margaret) Carmichael of Scarborough, and Mrs. Leo (Doris) McGovern of Buxton; two sons, Richard of Raymond, and William of Gray; five brothers, Richard Horr, Dana Horr and David Horr, all of Portland, James Horr of Westbrook, and Robert Malia of Portland; two sisters, Margaret Pressnell of Tennessee and Shirley Doughty of Bath; nine grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
Visiting hours will be from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. Thursday at Hay & Peabody Funeral Home, 749 Congress St., Portland, where a service will be held at 1 p.m. Friday, followed by burial in Forest City Cemetery, South Portland.

Anna May Maynard, 61, of Boyd Street, died Wednesday at a Portland hospital.
She was born here, a daughter of Dana and Anna Maila Orison, and attended Portland schools.
She was a homemaker, and enjoyed making gowns for dolls.
Surviving are her husband of 41 years, Eugene Maynard; a son, John T. Maynard of Limington; five daughters, Delilah Freeman of West Buxton, Katherine A. Fortin of Portland, Donna Stuart of Windham, Rhonda McDonald of South Portland and Anna M. Yates of Raymond; six brothers, James Horr of Westbrook, William Horr of Buxton, (her twin brother), David Horr, Robert Maila, David Hau and Richard Horr, all of Portland; two sisters, Margaret Presnell of Tazwell, Tenn., and Shirley Doughty of Bath; and 15 grandchildren.
A funeral service will be held at 10 a.m. Monday at Hay & Peabody, 749 Congress St. Burial will follow in Forest City Cemetery, South Portland.

Robert Martin
Malia, 71
PORTLAND -- Robert Martin Malia, formerly known as Robert Martin Horr, 71, passed away at his Portland residence.
A lifetime Portland resident, he was born on April 27, 1940, to the late Dana O. and Anna E. (Malia) Horr.
Robert served in the Army stationed in Alaska in the 1960s. He served as a volunteer firefighter on Peaks Island
and worked at Concrete Forms with his brothers. He married Julie Dalfonso in 1968. He worked at General Electric
in South Portland, and for the City of Portland. Later, he worked at Infinity Federal Credit Union.
He is survived by his three children, Juliane Hillock and her husband Keith, Martin Malia and his wife Chang
and Joshua Malia; as well as five grandchildren, Brooke, Olivia, Julia and Edward Hillock and Nathaniel Hitchcock.
He is also survived by three brothers, James Horr, Dana Horr and David Hau and his wife Sharon, two sisters,
Margaret Presnell and her husband John, and Shirley D. Horr; a sister-in- law, Barbara Horr; as well as many nieces
and nephews. He was preceded in death by two brothers and one sister, Richard Horr, William Horr and Anna (Horr) Maynard.
A memorial service will held at 11 a.m. on Thursday, Dec. 8, 2011, at Jones, Rich & Hutchins Funeral Home,

Brother Bob, it would be a full book to say all I know and feel.
He lost mother when he was about 16 months old. With nine of us children,
I'm sure he did not get the personal care he needed. We had a wonderful
grandmother that stepped in to care for us. She gave all she had to give,
a lot of love. She kept us together. We all cared for each other.
We all helped in what way we could. I know of no other family that has
the closeness we all have for each other. Bob was a wonderful person all his life.
He had so much love and kindness. He never showed any anger, just love.
I'm going to miss him, but I'm happy for him - He's with Mother, where we all will be someday.
May he rest in peace. He is gone from here, but not gone from our hearts. Love you brother - sister Margaret

Grief lingers 10 years later

About 1 a.m. on Aug. 5, 2001, a Russian oil tanker collided with a fishing
boat bound for Rockland from Georges Bank with a hold full of herring.
The 541-foot tanker, which had left Boston, continued its journey to
Newfoundland. The 83-foot trawler sank in about a minute, dragging three men
trapped inside to their deaths. The boat's captain scrambled into a lifeboat and
survived.
The story, which held the attention of the news media for about a year, was a
mix of maritime tragedy and international intrigue as the U.S. Department of
Justice wrangled with authorities in Canada and Russia. The case was complicated
by maritime law, which doesn't give the United States jurisdiction over
international waters.
The captain and two crew members of the Russian ship were charged in
Newfoundland with manslaughter. Released on bail, they returned to Russia. The
charges eventually were dropped.
The media moved on from the story long ago, but the families of the men who
died have not. Today, the 10th anniversary of the crash, the grief remains for
the family of Mark Doughty, a fisherman from Yarmouth who was 33 when he left
behind a wife and two young daughters.
"We don't want anybody to forget them or what happened to them boys, all of
them," said his sister, Sharon Brown. "All the families are feeling the same
right now. It's a horrible way to lose a child or a brother."
A Coast Guard investigation concluded that there was no reasonable
explanation for why the crew of the tanker, the Virgo, failed to prevent the
collision 130 miles east of Cape Ann, Mass. The circumstances required the
tanker to give way to the smaller vessel, the Starbound.
The Starbound's radar was functioning, but its collision alarm did not
activate.
Starbound crew members James Sanfilippo of Thomaston and Thomas Frontiero of
Gloucester, Mass., perished along with Doughty. One of Doughty's closest
friends, the captain, Joseph Marcantonio of Gloucester, survived.
He said this week that he remains too upset about the crash to talk about
it.
The fact that the Coast Guard never recovered Doughty's body made his death
harder to accept, Brown said.
Doughty's mother, Shirley Doughty Horr, who lives in Portland, said that at
times she expects Mark to walk through the doorway of her apartment. He was an
outstanding swimmer, she said, and for a long time she held out hope that he had
managed to reach an island somewhere.
"When I went to the funeral, nothing was real to me," she said. "People kept
telling me he was gone," but it didn't feel that way.
Horr's grief was so deep after the death of her youngest child that she
remained in bed for months. Within a year, she had lost 50 pounds.
She finally escaped her depression, she said, after she became a regular
volunteer at a nearby nursery school. She loves children, and there's nothing
more healing than spending her days with them, she said.
Horr and her former husband, Robert Doughty, raised five children on
Chebeague Island. Mark was adored as the baby of the family and developed a
happy-go-lucky nature that put him at the family's center.
Brown, who was 10 years older, said her bond with him was especially strong
because he was like her own child.
Brown has hung photographs of Mark Doughty all over her home in
Phippsburg.
In her living room, Horr has a 6-foot-tall glass case that displays photos of
Mark as a baby, a Boy Scout, a teenager at his high school graduation, and a
fishermen. There's also a copy of his captain's license, issued by the Coast
Guard, and statuettes of various religious figures and angels.
She also keeps a chest filled with newspaper clippings, some of Mark's
clothing, VHS tapes of television news stories about the accident, and
correspondence with the staff of U.S. Sen. Susan Collins, R-Maine, who had worked on the legal case
with the Department of Justice.
Robert Doughty of Greenville, Mark Doughty's oldest brother, said he still
thinks of Mark every day. He went to Gloucester recently to see some old
friends. At the Crow's Nest, a waterfront bar that's popular with fishermen, he
saw a photo of the Starbound hanging on the wall behind the bar.
"I said, 'That's my brother's boat.' There were two older guys there. They
thought the world of Mark. They had tears in their eyes."
Brown said she cried almost every day for two years after her brother's
death. She has finally accepted the loss.
"I have come to realize, after 10 years, that my little brother is an angel,"
she said, "and his grave is the ocean."
