    Deceased Name: Obituary John Handley Jr. of Chelmsford, 83
    John M. Handley Jr. of Chelmsford, a Lowell businessman, died Thursday at Lowell General Hospital after a lengthy illness. He was 83.
    Born in Lowell, Mr. Handley attended Lowell schools and graduated from Lowell High School in 1935. He was a resident of Chelmsford for more than 40 years.
    He served in the Navy during World War II as a machinist mate second class aboard the USS Wasp in the South Pacific.
    Mr. Handley received a Navy Commendation Medal for saving men trapped inside the ship after it was bombed off the coast of Japan on March 19, 1945. He received this award and a commendation in 1996.
    Mr. Handley was the owner of the Chelmsford Gift Shop in Central Square for more than 40 years and was the founder of the Corner Kitchen on Westford Street in Lowell. He also founded several resort businesses on the New Hampshire coast and the Lakes Region.
    Mr. Handley was a former member of the board of directors of the First Bank and Trust in Chelmsford and was a member and incorporator of the board of directors of the Enterprise Bank and Trust.
    He was a communicant of St. Mary's Church in Chelmsford for many years.
    Mr. Handley is survived by his wife, Gertrude (McKeon) of Chelmsford; two daughters, Jane Carrigg of North Hampton, N.H., and Julie Handley-Hoar of Brighton; two sons, John M. of Westford and Joseph E. of Chelmsford; a sister, Arline Plunkett of North Tewksbury; six grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.
    A funeral Mass will be celebrated at 9 a.m. today at St. Mary's Church, Chelmsford.
    Burial will be in St. Mary's Cemetery, North Tewksbury.

    NORTH HAMPTON, N.H. ? Jane Marie (Handley) Carrigg, 63, of North Hampton, N.H., passed away peacefully Monday morning, Jan. 3, 2011 at Merrimack Valley Hospice House in Haverhill, from complications due to early-onset Alzheimer's disease.
    Born in Lowell, in 1947, Jane was the daughter of the late John M. and Gertrude A. (McKeon) Handley. She graduated from Merrimack College, Class of 1968 and, after raising four children, went on to open a popular women's clothing store in Newburyport. In addition to being a successful business, Market Flair also led to many close friendships and became Jane's passion for over 20 years. In her store and in her life Jane was known for her generosity and, especially, her sense of humor. Jane was also a runner, a tennis player, a lover of animals most especially her faithful Shih-Tzu, Mo, who was always at her side.
    In addition to her husband of 42 years, Robert F. Carrigg of North Hampton, N.H., she is survived by her children, Lisa A. (Mrs. David C.) Cancel of Amesbury, her son, Robert F. Carrigg, Jr., of Portsmouth, N.H., Kelly J. (Mrs. Nelson E.) Walker of Epping, N.H., and Ryan M. Carrigg of Cambridge. Her beloved granddaughter, Caralena Jane Cancel of Amesbury, remembers her grandmother with a smile. Jane is further survived by her brothers, John M. Handley, III, and Joseph E. Handley of Chelmsford; and her sister, Julie A. Handley (Mrs. Charles) Hoar. Extended family, friends and countless Market Flair patrons will miss her dearly.
    ARRANGEMENTS: A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at Saint Theresa of Lisieux Church, 815 Central Road, Rye Beach, N.H., Friday, Jan. 7, 2011 at 11 a.m. Family and friends are invited to call to the Robert K. Gray, Jr. Funeral Home, 24 Winnacunnet Road, Hampton, on Thursday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. A private family scattering service off of North Beach, in North Hampton, will be held at a later date.
