Mary I. Hoar, nee Irwin, was born in Lancaster County, PA, April 14, 1807. She died in the faith of the Gospel in Fulton County, Illinois November 24, 1891.
Her parents were Presbyterian. At fourteen years of age she was converted and united with the Methodist Episcopal Church. For seventy years she lived a faithful consistent life, loved and esteemed by all.
She was married to Jesse K. Hoar in her twenty-second year. Of this union were born four sons and seven daughters; three sons and six daughters lived to attain manhood and womanhood. The youngest son, Rev. B. A. Hoar, is a member of the Southern Illinois Conference. Sister Hoar lived to see forty-five grand children and twenty-five great grandchildren.
She removed in 1844 from her native state to Knox County, Ohio, thence to Fulton County, Illinois, in 1856, thence to Fayette County in 1859. The home of Sister Hoar was always a hospital retreat for the itinerant. Prudent and careful with her neighbors, loving and kind to her family, her life has been a constant benediction. One of her sons said of her, "She never gave unholy council, nor said an unholy word in the presence of her family." The words of the wise man, Proverbs 31, Chapt. 10 - 31 verses are eminently true of this saint of God.
She was buried in the cemetery at Cuba, Illinois, November 25. The funeral sermon was preached by the Rev.W. H. Whittock of the Central Illinois Conference. Full years and worn by time and care she was anxious to depart and be with Christ.

If anyone finds a connection to these families I would be glad to answer
their questions/share information. I have a copy of the book below as
    well
as a book on the Hildabrand/Hildebrand family of the same area. I
    probably
could glean more from them for your page if you're ever in need.

The core family at the time of the "run" is below (with the exception of
the last two children who were born on the homesteaded land):

    Descendants of Isiah Sanford Hoar

A copy of a letter by the late Ed Hoar (1877-1945) , Carrier, OK to his
brother Benjamin J. Hoar (1875- ?), Okemah, OK as it appears in "History
and Geneology of the Families of Hoare and Hoar" written by Edwin C.

there is no correction of grammar or spelling to this letter from that
    book

    Dear Brother:

To go back fifty two years to the day of the opening of the Cherokee Strip

is a long way. But, there are a few things that stand out, never to be
forgotten, as to the day of September 16, 1893. There are only three that

survive today, Uncle Conda Eakin, Challey Nelson and myself.

Our family and the men that made the "run" together were living near
Towanda, Kansas. Those in the group were: W.C. Nelson and his sons,
George C., H.C. (Tobe), and Chalmers who was about eighteen years old.
Also Uncle Conda, A.B. Eakin and an old and typical Kentucky Colonel, Mr.
Woolridge (he drove a fine filly and buckboard), and lastly my father,
    I.S.
Hoar and myself (I being the age of sixteen years).

We left home about September 5, 1893. There were four wagons and the
buckboard in our outfit. Our first stop was at Arkansas City, Kansas, and

it was here that we were informed that we could not drive across the
"Strip" as the army had cleared it of all prospective homesteaders.
Finally we loaded our outfit on a freight train to be shipped to the south

side where we wanted to start the "run". It was at Arkansas City where we

first saw "running water" in a building for domestic use. There were
toilets and lavatories there at the Santa Fe Depot. It was there that we
all washed an cleaned after the loading of our outfit onto the freight
    car.

After unloading and putting our wagons together at Orlando, Oklahoma, we
went to Hennessey, where we were starting the "run". We were all required

to register here. On arrival at Hennessey, or rather two miles north on
the border between Old Oklahoma and the Cherokee Strip, we found thousands

of people waiting to register for the race. It was a very hot, dusty and
windy day and this kind of weather lasted for several days. It took a few

days to register. People were required to stay in line, each waiting his
turn (they all stayed in). Finally all our folks were registered.

After studying the maps for a long time and after a lengthy discussion it
was decided to go to a point know as "The Three Cottonwoods", about seven
miles west of Hennessey, to start the race. We arrived there on September

14, 1893 and made camp. At twelve noon on September 16th, everybody being

in his selected place, the wild race started at the firing a gun.

The Colonel, with the filly and the buckboard, Father and "Old Dan" (a
Morgan gelding who lived for many years and did much to help father
    develop
and establish a home on NE 10-23-8). The rest of our boys followed on
their horses with hundreds of others, horseback, front wheels of wagons,
buggies, springwagons, and all sorts of vehicles. Instructions to Challey

Nelson and myself were to stop and make camp at the first creek we came to

on the Old Cantonment Trail we were to follow. We each had two wagons and

extra horses, and the chuck wagon outfit. Each man carried only a light
lunch, a stake, and a hammer or a hand axe.

As soon as the trail ahead was cleared, we were on our way. The loads
    were
heavy and the trail was sandy and not too good to travel at a very rapid
speed. Early in the afternoon we arrived at Elm Creek which was located
south of where Lahoma now stands. This was a blind creek and was not
    shown
on the map, and how were we to know that we should have gone about four
miles, which would have placed us two miles east of Lahoma at the crossing

of Turkey Creek. After making camp we found there was no water available
for the horses so we explored the country and then dug a well in the creek

bed (which later proved to be in the middle of the section line). No
sooner had we struck water when men came with buckets and horses to the
well and we poor boys almost had to fight to get water for our own thirsty

    horses.

About midnight Uncle Conda, Eck and Tobe Nelson found us. The next
    morning
at daylight we started for our claims that they had for us, north of what
is now Carrier, Oklahoma. All remained on their claims with the exception

of Colonel Woolridge. He drove the filly and the buckboard through the
finest land in Oklahoma, through Garfield, Grant, and Kay Counties to
Arkansas City where we had started. He said "he did not see a good corn
(cawn) farm in the Cherokee Strip".

As we were crossing the flats north of Drummond someone called out "a
deer". Soon Tobe Nelson was at the scene with his 45-70 rifle and just as

the sun came into view he fired. No meat, we soon discovered the deer was

a stray mule. There were no roads or trails so it was difficult to locate

where we were to camp. Fifteen miles on we came northeast to the site of
Enid, a tent town, then followed a fence row to our camp. It was located
about one-half mile northeast of where our house now stands, near the
Barnard home now. We arrived about noon with food for the almost starved
men, and were they glad to see us.

There were lots of antelope in the country. They were frightened by the
excitement and we saw many herds. On Monday afternoon as we were all
around the camp a herd was sighted as soming our way. Five of us mounted
our horses. Armed with a shot gun I mounted "Pet", my favorite Indian
Pony. The chase was on, I cut off a buck and still remember that my hand
was on the trigger and I was in good shooting distance of the buck. If I
didn't get him with the first shot I woud try again, then something
happened, my pony hit a buffalo wallow and threw me. Several hours later
    I
regained consciousness in camp where they had carried me. Again, no meat!

The next spring, however, I did shoot an antelope on the homestead. At
this time food was limited to coffee, hot bread, salt pork, and sometimes
beans. All food was cooked on a sheetiron stove. How well I remember our

first good meal consisting of coffee and praire chicken. It was several
days later (after the opening day) as we were waiting to file on the
homestead, that Tobe and Challey Nelson, Uncle Conda, Eck and I decided to

go to the Glass Mountains about fifty miles west to hunt for deer and
    other
big game in that section. About noon on the day we left camp we found
    some
grass that had not been burned and there we killed nine praire chickens.
Immediately we made a camp and dressed the chickens and put them in a pot
of water, boiled them, then put some flour in for gravy. We made coffee,
what a feed, meat this time!

When we returned from the hunting trip we were informed that the men
couldn't file until later, so we all returned to Kansas. Some weeks later

father returned to Enid and file his claim. On his return (to Kansas) I
remember that a neighbor asked him what he thought of Oklahoma. He
replied, "My claim, someday, will be worth at least two thousand dollars."

He surely was an optimist, for twenty four years ago he sold the farm for
    nineteen thousand dollars.

On March 1, 1894 the family with all their earthly possessions moved onto
the claim, with the exception of mother, who was ill, and the youngest
child Verne who came latter, making a family with eight children. After
arriving on the claim I went with father to buy some furniture and some
lumber for a house. We drove with two wagons. There weren't any roads or

trails part of the way. After father had made all his purchases we met an

old neighbord, Frank Green who was a carpenter. Father hired him for a
dollar a day to build out house. Soon afterwards we started for home.
Darkness came upon us before we were in sight of our tent and we missed
    it,
going on a quarter of a mile north. Father, who was walking beside the
wagon to keep warm, stumbled and fell over a pile of sod. He made some
pertinent remarks about a fellow who would pile sod up in such a way.
(Next morning we discovered the spot where father fell was where he
    himself
had piled the dirt and stuck his stake on that memorable day, September
    16,
1893). We drove on west about two miles getting into sand hills and
finding that we were lost. We made camp and since it was very cold we
unloaded the stove. We only had one light quilt so I got in between
    father
and Mr. Green, sleeping until daylight. A rooster crowed and father said,

"That's my rooster crowing." They got me up and there was home two miles
away. Sister Susie was the homemaker until mother came and that night we
were lost the brave little girl burned papers (there was no oil) hoping to

    light our way home.

After paying for the materials and other things bought the previous day
father had thirty five dollars left.

Pioneers and heroes - - surely father was both.

    Sincerely,

    (signed) Ed (Hoar)

state is permitted to offer evidence though it proves the commission of another crime. Lizar v. State, 74 Okla. Cr. 368m 126 P.2d 552; Zewalk v. State,
The evidence in this case reveals that on the evening of May 22, 1942, the deceased, Verne A. Hoar, and his son Edwin Hoar, eleven years of age, entered the automobile of Ralph O. Johnson at Wichita, Kan., about 7:30 o'clock, with the intention of going to California, where Mr. Johnson lived. The deceased was to share the expenses of the trip, and to pay $15 therefor. Other passengers were a Mr. Edwards, a brother-in-law of Mr. Johnson, and a sailor by the name of Barr. They were in a 1937 Ford Tudor, and Mr. Hoar and his son and Mr. Barr were in the back seat, and Mr. Edwards was in the front seat with Mr. Johnson, who was driving. They reached Liberal, Kan., about 2:30 in the morning on May 23, 1945 and stopped there for food and gasoline. At this time Mr. Johnson testified he examined his car and checked the lights, and found them in good condition. He was driving on his dimmers as was his practice. He was going in a southwesterly direction on U. S. Highway No. 54, and when about a quarter of a mile east of the town of Tyrone, in Texas county, he saw the lights of a car approaching from the opposite direction. He soon observed that the car was on his side of the road. As the car approached, he decided that driver of the truck was not going to yield the right of way. It had been raining and large bar ditches on each side of the road were filled with water. Acting in an emergency, he attempted to turn to the left, but before he could do so, the truck which was driven by defendant struck the side of his automobile, it was turned over twice, and

CHARLES HOAR & AMERICA ROARK HOAR
(Great Grandparents of Clair Mercier Talyai)
Education was very important to the Hoar family. Charles attended rural school in Ash Rock Township, Rooks County, Kansas. He continued his education and graduated from Rooks County High School in 1886. After high school, he entered the Stockton Academy, which was an extension of the Preparatory Department of Washburn College at Topeka, Kansas. In 1892, Charles earned a degree in business from Salina Normal University, Salina, Kansas.
Charles and America were married at the home of her parents, six miles north of Alton, Osborne, Kansas, on August 19, 1893. The marriage was performed by E. R. Baber, a minister for the United Brethren Church. After the marriage, he taught at Spring Branch school, District 58 of the Ash Rock Township. After one year, he and America moved to Plainville, Rooks, Kansas, where he taught for several years in District 77. While in Plainville, Kansas Charles and America welcomed their first four children; Edith, Charles, Clara and Hazel. Their last two daughters, Edna and Zola, were born in Portis, Osborne County, Kansas.
In 1912 Charles and America moved their family to Kiowa County, Colorado. According to family "gossip" America always wanted to live on a farm and raise chickens, while Charles was happy being a school teacher. So west the family went! America's sister, Effie Ann and her husband Milton Moyer, moved with the Hoar family to Kiowa County.
Charles filed under the Homestead Act for property located 15 miles southeast of Sheridan Lake, in what is called McComas and Pleasant Hill School District. He taught at Pleasant Hill School. Life had been very difficult on the prairies of Kiowa County. After four or five years the family decided to make another move. The town of New Raymer was their new destination. Charles owned and operated a filling station on Main Street in New Raymer, Colorado. Charles served as Justice of the Peace and taught part time in the school. On February 19, 1917, the town voted to incorporate and on April 4, the first city election was held. The town had a population of 2000 and business was thriving. Charles' garage and Ford dealership was one of three such businesses in town.
By 1920 New Raymer started to decline. Charles' garage and car dealership was not profitable and he and America once again decided to move. In the early 1920's they moved to the Hartman and Bristol area of Prowers County, Colorado. Charles returned to teaching and farming. It was here in Hartman, that their daughter, Clara Myrtle married Russell McCracken.
Charles made tire swings for his grandchildren and hung them from the cottonwood trees in the front yard. He would always come up with some new idea to entertain the grandchildren. But, most of all, he enjoyed reading and telling them stories.
Charles was diagnosed with prostate cancer in 1939 and died at his home on March 7, 1948, at the age of 79. He was of medium build, about 5 feet 10 inches tall and had brown hair and was a very quiet man. He was happiest when he could spend his time reading. The Stockton, Kansas, newspaper stated in an article written at the time of his death that "Many of the older residents of this county remember Mr. Hoar as a prominent school teacher. He pioneered doubly in the fields of education and farming. He taught school for several years in Rooks County and for 27 years in Colorado."

    OBITUARY
Charlie Hoar, well-known Colorado pioneer, passed away at his home Sunday evening, March 7, after an illness lasting for nine years.
Charlie Hoar was born to William B. and Mary Ellen Hoar in Cuba, Ill., Sept. 10, 1869. As a small boy he moved with his parents to Rooks County, Kansas, where they settled. He received his formal education at Kansas State Teachers' Academy at Stockton, Kan.
He pioneered doubly in the fields of education and farming. He taught in public schools for 27 years.
On August 19, 1893, he was united in marriage to America T. Roark at Alton, Kan., and to this union six children were born. In 1944 they celebrated their golden wedding anniversary at their home in Bristol.
At the age of 24 he united with the Congregational church and has since been faithful to that church.
The family moved to Colorado in 1913 and homesteaded 15 miles southeast of Sheridan Lake. Here Mr. Hoar farmed and taught in community schools. He later moved to the Hartman and Bristol communities where he farmed until retiring in 1938. After his retirement he moved into Bristol, where he lived until his death.
He is survived by his wife, Mrs. America T. Hoar; a son, Raymond Hoar of Lamar; five daughters, Mrs. Edith Newell of Canon City, Mrs. Myrtle Casburn of Colorado Springs, Mrs. Hazel Martin of Lamar, Mrs. Creta Krieg of Rye, and Mrs. Zola Dodge of Granada; twenty grand children and nine great-grandchildren; three brothers, Oscar Hoar of Woodston, Kan., Willie Hoar of Osborne City, Kan., and Henry Hoar of St. Louis, Mo.; and two sisters, Mrs. Cora LaRue of Mankato, Kan., and Mrs. Mary Allen of Woodston, Kan. Obituary:
Cora LaRue, daughter of William and Mary Hoar, was born in Cuba, Illinois July 15, 1877 and departed this life April 17, 1961 at the age of 83 years, 9 months and 2 days.
She moved with her parents to a farm in Rooks County, where she grew to womanhood. She was united in marriage to Chas. Everett LaRue Sept 8, 1895. He preceded her in death Nov. 6, 1943. To this union were born six children. Melvin, who also preceded her in death during World War I; Carl of Mankato, Kansas; Leslie of Fort Collins, Colo.; Archie of Denver, Colo.; Estella Taylor, of Mankato, Kansas; and Thelma Butler, of Fort Collins, Colo. She also leaves 12 grandchildren, 24 great-grandchildren; and 2 great-great-grandchildren; one sister, Mary Allen, of Fort Worth, Texas; two brothers, Will Hoar of Osborne, Kansas, and Henry Hoar of St. Louis, Mo.
Everett and Cora first resided on her father's old homestead in the Ash Rock community for a number of years. In December, 1959 she was made a member of the Sons and Daughters of the Soddes, and of this pioneer honor she was justly proud. She moved with her husband to Woodston, Kansas where they operated a grocery business for several years. Later they moved to Ionia, Kansas where again they were engaged in the grocery business. Due to the failing health of her husband they retired and moved to Mankato, Kansas in the fall of 1942.
She was a member of the Ash Rock Congregational church, north of Woodston for many years. When she moved to Mankato, her membership was established with the Assembly of God church. Her entire life was spent in faithful work of her Lord. She was an active member serving with love and joy to the very end of her long and useful life. She served as Deaconess for many years. Her Christian influence will be far reaching and felt ofter with the marking of time.
Her loved ones were comforted when among her later treasures these lines were written by her feeble hand:
Let me not die before I've done for thee My earthly work, whatever it may be; Call me not hence with mission unfulfilled. Let me not leave my space of ground untilled; Impress this truth upon me that not one Can do the portion that I leave undone.
Funeral services were held Thursday, April 20 at 1:30 p.m. at the Kramer Funeral Home in Mankato and at 3:30 at the Ash Rock church. Rev. Jack Dennisen and Rev. Byron Luckey were in charge of the services.

    BY OSCAR HOAR
The following happened in Kansas, five miles north of what is now Woodston. My mother and father (William Bramwell Hoar and Mary Helen Churchill) came to this country in a covered wagon, from Fulton County Illinois in the year of 1877. At that time they had their choice of Government land. After much deliberation they chose a claim where there were few trees and level land as my father was weary of farming up and down hills and more than weary of clearing the land of timber. It must have been a hopeless looking task at the time, as there were no horses. I am sure my mother must have had a few moments of doubt as to the wisdom of moving so far away from the familiar things of home. There must have been fear in her heart, as she looked at her six small children.
It was not so with my father, his stout heart knew no fear and as he looked around he was pleased with what he saw. He began at once to put up a house as that was the first thing needed. For this he used a sod plow the regular side of it being 12" wide. When he had enough sod broken to put up a house he cut it in 24" pieces and laid two pieces of sod length wise all around the house. Then he laid one piece cross wise to break the joints. When the house was as high as desired he cut poles to lay across to make a roof. After this, 12" boards were laid over the poles and covered with sod. Then father got white rock clay and put over this sod roof to seal up the cracks and keep the roof from leaking.
Most of the "Soddies" had dirt floors, lucky was the house wife who had a board floor. She was the envy of all the neighbors even tho the floor was made of common 12" borards and were rough and splintery. It was almost impossible to put a baby on the floor as he would get his hands and legs full of splinters. This was the kind of house I was born in, July 7, 1879.
At the age of six I started to school, walking two miles each way. If the weather was snowy or bad my older brothers and sisters would see that I got to school.
When I was nine years old we moved into a frame house which was quite different. We were proud and happy as we were modern now. The frame house was not as warm in winter or cool in the summer as the "Soddy" had been.
At the age of eleven I was able to take a team of horses and cultivate corn, walking of course. When I finished grade school my folks were too poor to send me to college (we had no high schools) so I went to work for the nieghbors. I got the handsome wage of $13.00 a month. The last year I worked out I got $75.00 for 75 days work pitching wheat to a thrashing macine. By that time I had saved enough to buy me a team of four year old mules. They cost me $125.00. They were wild and wooly and I had some merry times getting them broke. I then rented forty acres of wheat land and with a 14" plow, the mules and I walked and plowed this 40 acres doing two acres a day if we were lucky. I planted wheat that fall and had a good crop. It made 20 bushel to the acre and I got 56 cents a bushel for it.
About this time I was busy continuing the courting I had started with Grace Lambert while in school.
The school marm was boarding at grandmas house at the time Pa started courtin Ma. Their courting days started by Pa walking Ma home from school. Ma started getting home late from school, Grandma started asking questions. The school teacher knowing the questions, cooperated, by staying at school late writing letters in order to give the young lovers a chance to get home before she did, so that there would be no questions asked.
Even then as now some one tried to foul "Dan Cupid." One evening Horace Pauley saw them walking home from school holding hands and took it upon himself to tell Grandpa that Pa and Ma were spooning on the way home from school and that explained why Ma was late getting home from school.
Now Grandpa Wicker being a stern old gentleman with ideas of his own as to how his daughter should be courted, promptly asserted himself, Grandma not to be out done promptly put in her two cents worth as to what she thought of Horace Pauley for being a snitch. This cooled Grandpa down to zero.
With the obstacles out of the way "Dan Cupid" went to work. Thanks to Grandma Wicker and the school teacher, true love was winner, and we now have our Pa and Ma.
We decided to get married which we did on June 23, 1900. We had no place to live, but my father had a farm he had bought just recently. The house had burned down, but it had a basement which was walled up and in good shape, we put a roof on it making a room 12 by 28 ft. Here I took my bride.
I had $38.00 with which to buy furniture. We bought a little old cook stove to cook on and to keep us warm. We had no money to buy fuel and very little timber, so we had to burn cow chips. If you never burned cow chips you don't know what a vicious circle it is. It consists of a continual stream of cow chips going into the stove and another continual stream of carrying out ashes. The odor was never to fragrant. This was pretty tough but as my elders said; a good lesson for youngsters. At any rate we made out and our first baby was born here, a little girl and we were really proud parents.
From there we moved to a farm close to Webster where our first son was born. We had climbed up the ladder as far as living conditions were concerned. We now lived in a sod house in place of a dug out and burned cobs in place of cow chips. Cobs do not burn quite so fast or make quite so many ashes as cow chips and the aroma is much better.
We then moved back to a farm north of Woodston for a few years. After farming there for a while I decided I would like to go into the meat business. In fact I thought that I might as well, as the neighbors were always after me to butcher for them, especially if it was cold and snowy.
I had a sale and moved to Woodston where I bought a Meat Market. I didn't know a thing about running a store but was determined to learn. I soon found out all people didn't pay for what they bought which didn't help the business prosper very much. When I bought the store I only had $800.00. I paid $600.00 for my equipment and didn't have much left to go on. My first beef cost me 2 1/2 cents a pound on foot. After six months I added a few groceries and continued for 38 years. I was broke several times but nobody knew it but me. Lots of times it was a hard pull, seven mouths to feed and money on the books but none in my pockets. Part of the money on the books I have not been able to collect to this day.
I always made it a point not to buy too much at a time and I did have a good reputation for paying my bills which kept me from having to hand over the keys a number of times. Really the whole thing that kept me going was Mom. She was very conservative and saved every thing usable. Nothing ever went to waste.
I worked 12 hours every day all these years except Saturday and then 18 hours on Saturday. At the age of seventy years I have decided to retire. With good luck and normal living I think we can get along.
In this 50 years six children were born to us, three girls and three boys, one girl died in infancy.

    WORDS OF OSCAR HOAR
MAY GOD HELP US TO CARRY ON THIS HERITAGE OF OUR FATHERS AND MOTHERS, THAT WE MAY ALSO DO OUR PART TO HELP MAKE THIS A BETTER WORLD.
