    LYDIADeclaration

    In order to obtain the benefits of the third act of Congress of the 4th July 1836
    State of New York
    County of Seneca, on this 12th day of May 1848 personally appeared before the Court holding at Ovid in and for the said county, Leonard Hobart at present a resident of said county, after being duly sworn according to law, deposes and says that he was born in 1777 during the war of the Revolution, doth on his oath make the following declaration in order to obtain the benefits of the provision made by the act of Congress passed July 4 1836, that this declaration is made in the name of the widow Lydia Hoar, or as she was called at the time of her death Lydia Hobart, widow of the late Leonard Hoar, and on behalf of all her surviving children.
    That this deponents said mother Lydia Hoar, or Hobart, was the widow of Leonard Hoar, who was as this deponent understands and believes a soldier in the war of the Revolution, that he was a resident of Brimfield and Leichester, Worchester County, Massachusetts during the whole war of the Revolution, that he resided part of the time in one and part of the time in the other of these two towns, that as this deponent understands and believes his said father Leonard Hoar served in the early part of the war of the Revolution and went to Boston in 1775, was in the Northern army, or Fort Stanwick, was at Fort Stanwick all of one Season, was at White Plains, was in service from 1775 to 1783 as this Deponent believes, that he was under various officers and stationed at various places, that he returned home from the service in October 1783 as this deponent believes, and strange as it may seem, this deponent depons and says, that he can well recollect seeing his said father return home from the army, of his arrival at home and where this deponent first saw him at the door, that he had been absent a long time, and that he was much of the time absent during the war of the Revolution, that this deponents said father and mother were married as this deponent believes in 1765 and at any rate before the commencement of the war of the Revolution, that this deponent has one brother now living who was born in 1773 or before the Revolution, that this deponents father died in 1813 leaving his widow Lydia Hoar above named and who remained his widow at his death and that she died on the 11th day of February 1840. Surviving at her death, the following named children survived her and who still survive, being her only children and that each of them is over twenty one years of age, Dix Hobart of Courtland NY, Leonard Hobart now of (???) NY, Lydia Gillett of Onondaga Co. NY and Benjamin B. Hobart of Michigan. The original name was Hoar but by a law of the State of New York it was changed to Hobart which is the present name. That said Leonard Hobart is a respected person.

    Application for certificate of Revolutionary Services made by a son of the party who rendered the service.

    County of Seneca, Town of Ovid

    The Secretary of the Commonwealth of Massachusetts is hereby requested to furnish evidence from the Rolls in his office, of the service of my late father Leonard Hoar in the war of the Revolution. He was probably a native of the town of Brimfield where he was married in 1765. During a part of the revolution he resided there, also he resided in Leichester during the revolution, Worchester County, Massachusetts. He enlisted from the town of Brimfield, or Leichester in the County of Worchester, State of Massachusetts. In the first part of the war, probably spring of '75 went to Boston, can not name his officers in the Regiment.

    The most that is recollected is that he went to Boston in the early part of the war, probably Spring of 1775-was called to the North Ticonderoga and Crown Point, was in the battle of White Plains, had one tour up the Mohawk in the State of New York, was stationed some time at Fort Stanwick, was at West Point and New Jersey, and in service four or five years, and probably the years from 1780 to Oct. 1783. The son recollects of his father returning in Oct. 1783 after an absence of two or three years, probably as a private or it may be as a non commissioned officer.

    of Syracuse, on the 17th. Day of May AD 1847

    In the Matter of Proving
    The last will and Testament
    Of
    Jacob Hoar, deceased
    (------------------) And therein from the last will and testament of the said Jacob Hoar, deceased, with the proofs thereof, were produced and are as follows, viz:
    I Jacob Hoar, of Pompey in the County of Onondaga
    and the State of New York, being of sound mind and memory make this my last will
    and testament as follows, to wit.
    First- I give and bequeath to my son Leonard the sum of one thousand dollars ($1000.)
    Second- I give and bequeath to my daughter Sally the sum of five hundred dollars $500.
    Third-I give and bequeath to my daughter Betsey the sum of five hundred dollars, $500.
    Fourth- I give and bequeath to my daughter Charlotte five hundred Dollars $500.
    Fifth- I give and bequeath to my sister Lydia Gillet, the sum of three hundred dollars, $300.
    And I further will that if after the payment of my funeral charges and all the other legal charges against me there shall any property of any kind be left it shall be divided between the before mentioned five legatees, that is the said Leonard, Sally, Betsey, Charlotte and Lydia Gillet in proportion to their respective legacies, which said several legacies or sums of money, I will and order to be paid to the said respective legatees within one year after my decease.
    And I do hereby appoint Eley Bard & John Smith both of Pompey executors of this my last will and testament.
    In witness thereof I have hereunto set my hand and seal this 12th day of August 1846.

    Died.? In Preble, Cortland County, N. Y.,
    March 5th 1860, after six year's severe suffering
    of Dropsey, Dier Hobart, aged 87 years.
    Mr. Hobart was born in Brimfield, Hamden
    county, Mass., in the year 1773. At the age of
    nineteen, he shouldered his knap-sack, with
    his clothes and axe, and started for the west.
    He landed at Onondaga Hollow in the spring
    of that year, and hired for the season to Gen.
    Asa Danforth. After his term of service expired
    with Mr. Danforth, he returned to his
    native place. In the year 1792, in company
    with Jesse Butler and two of his brothers, he
    returned and settled on Pompey Hill, where he
    resided for nineteen years. He then removed
    to the town of Tully, where he buried his companion,
    she leaving nine children. He subsequently
    married a second wife Miss Susan
    Shevelain, and settled on the west side of the
    Crooked Lake in that town. He united with the
    first Presbyterian Church that was organised at
    Preble, and was a regular worshiper in that
    church for almost thirty years.
    The family name was originally HOAR, but
    in tho year 1829, it was changed by the legislature
    of this State, upon the petition of his
    brother Aaron, to Hobart, but some of the relatives
    out of the state did not see fit to adopt
    the change.
    He had been the father of eighteen children,
    nine by each wife. Nine are now living, and
    eight followed his remains to the grave on the
    7th inst. Although he suffered very much
    from bodily pain, he bore his affliction with patience
    and christian resignation, for he gave
    evidence in his last hours that he was like the
    shock of corn, fully ripe, ready and fitted for
    his Master's use. The funeral services were
    conducted by Rev. Mr. Wakeman, pastor of
    the Congregational Church at Lafayette.?

    I am looking for decendants and/or information on Elizabeth "Betsey" Hobart and Hiatt SMITH ..
    Betsey was born in NY according to Illinois Federal Census .. She was a widow and aged 54 years, which makes her be born 1796 Hiatt about the same time frame. He died in an Accident in Sept 1850 and was born in CT. They had several children .. Albert, Mary, Lucetta, Lucette (were they twins?) One married a SALMON and one a LOWE .. Percy (female). Lucy Ann, Elizabeth, Samantha, Harmon V., Franklin, Orange F. All were born in NY except Orange was born in Ohio ..
    I know nothing for the siblings or their decendants .. Samantha is our line ..
    The SMITH family moved from NY to Erie County, Ohio. They moved there about 1834/5. They left for LaSalle County, IL abt 1857 .. Hiatt died in Sept 1850 and Census was recorded Oct 1850 ..     I have been looking for years for HOBART. Elizabeth HOBART, was from NY .. They called her Betsey/Betsy .. She married Hiatt SMITH b 1796 Connecticut .They moved from NY to Erie County, Ohio. They had issue : Albert, Lucy Ann, Mary, Percy M, Lucetta, Lucette, Elizabeth, Samantha C.,(my line), Harmon V, Franklin, and Orange F (he was born in Ohio) all the rest? Born in NY. They moved to OHIO about 1834. They sold all property in abt 1847. They moved to La Salle County, IL .. Sept of 1850 Hiatt SMITH died by an Accident involving a horse. He was 54y of age. Federal Census of 1850, La Salle County, IL .. census taken in Oct! List, head of household. Living with Elizabeth SMITH b NY, Percy M, Elizabeth, Samantha C, Harmon V, Franklin, and Orange F b. Ohio Also living with them is dau. Lucette LOWE and husband William LOWE.
    I have a letter written , 31 Oct 1840 to Hiatt Smith, mentions, Edward HOBART and wife, in Burlington, Iowa! I do know that Edward HOBART, brother to Hiatt SMITH'S wife Elizabeth (Betsey). was living in the Erie/Huron counties of OHIO. Edward had a Mercantile Store there. I assume that Hiatt loaned money to Edward as he deeded property to Hiatt and the same property was deeded back and forth for years. Until he sold all to Hiatt SMITH. I find it interesting that Betsey also was an owner of the property. They sold everything in the year 1847. Then I lost track of them .. Finally last year? I found them! This is what I do know.
    Edward HOBART and wife, Emaline, in Sept 1840, only child, Hiatt HOBART, died in Erie County (newspaper obit) at age 1y. Edward and wife were in Burlington, IA in late Oct. 1840 .. then I lose them.

    Albert was married as a Place for him for work was in Burlington, IA , Lost Them .. according to the letter written by John R, WOODS a friend to Hiatt SMITH.
    Mary, I have never found her after the mention in Letter

    Elizabeth, She lived with Samantha C and her husband in Wisconsin and IL (1860 &1870 Census) She was also a Spinster,
    Samantha Clarke, married Robert Moore HOBSON in La Salle County, 1853, they had four children, Nellie, John West, Lucy S, and Cornelia W, we decend from her 3rd child, Lucy Samantha
    Harmon V, m a Martha and had Walton , Hobart E., Jennie, Hiatt, Harmon V. Jr, Flora and Robert, they lived in DeWitt County of IA.
    Franklin , have not found him .. after 1850 Census in IL
    Orange F. , He lived in IA, the in Arkasas with his sisters 1880 Census, Percy M SMITH and Elizabeth SMITH I have his Obit and says he died in CA and body shipped back. To where? I do not know. Percy was traveling to meet the remains ..Where? do not know.
    Maybe this is too much at one time, but maybe, just maybe it might trigger someone. Hope so!

I can't find Betsy after the 1850 Census. Possible she remarried. Her Daughter, Samantha said she never remarried. I have found Harmon living in Iowa, Albert was living in Burlington, Iowa .. Oct 31, 1840 with wife Emeline. So what happened to all the children? Does this touch any search Smith families? Harmon named one son Hyatt/Hiatt and one named Harmon Jr. and another Hobart ..

    I think (note!) that she was one of the daughters of Leonard Hoar Jr. and his wife Dorcas. Many of the Hoar families in the area of Onondaga and Cortland County, NY, had their surname legally changed to Hobart in the early 1830s.     HORACE BRENINGSTALL, of Petersburgh, Summerfield township, a broom handte manufacturer, was born in Dundee July 18, 1843. His parents were Seth and Lucy (Hobart) Breningstall. Horace remained in Dundee until 1852, when he came to Raisinville township, where he remained until the breaking out of the war of the Rebellion. He enlisted May 20, 1861, in Co. A, 4th Mich. Inf., as corporal, remaining with the regiment until it was mustered out of service June 30, 1864. He reenlisted March 21, 1865, in Co. I, 5th U. S. Vet. Vol., as private, and was mustered Out March 21, 1866. Through exposure he contracted rheumatism; he participated in the battles of New Bridge, Hanover Court House, Mechanicsville, Gaines Mill, Savage's Station, Antulaus, White Oak Swamp, Gainesville. second Bull Run, Malvern Hill, Chancelloraville, Gettysburg, Wilderness, Spottsylvania and several other engagements. He is a member of Morgan Parker Post, No. 281, G. A. R., of which he is commander. He was married July 11, 1868, to Elizabeth Main. Three children were born to them: Reuben, born March 31, 1869; Susan A., born Nov. 18, 1873, and Phila Addie, born March 14. 1880. He is a Republican in politics, and has held several township offices and postmaster. He is also a member of the Masonic Order.

    Mrs. Lewis Northrup, a former resident
    of Homer, who has for some time
    made her home in Vesper, died at an
    early hour Monday morning.
    She leaves to mourn their loss her
    husband, Lewis Northrup, one daughter,
    Mrs. Frank Van Camp of Tully,
    and four sons. Hobart Long of Vesper,
    Nelson Northrup of Delphi Falls,
    Frank Northrup of New Woodstock,
    and EUis Northrup of this village.
    Three brothers also survive her. Nelson
    Hobart of Cortland, Dix Hobart
    of East Homer and John Hobart of
    Vesper.
    The funeral will be held in the Methodist
    Episcopal church at Preble Wednesday
    afternoon at 2 o'clock. Inter-
    ment will be made in Elmwood ceme-
    tery in Preble.

    NELSON HOBART
    Octogenarian Succumbs after Illness
    of Four Month-
    Nelson Hobart of this city 81, died
    in Cortlandville this morning at 4
    o'clock after an illness of four months
    duration.
    Mr, Hobart was born in the town of
    Preble Sept. 5, 1847. He was the son
    of Leaman and Latichy Chevalier
    Hobart. there being several children
    of the family. The greater part of
    his life was spent in Cortland.
    He leaves his wife, Mrs. Cora Hobart
    af Cortland, and two children.
    Orange Hobart of Tully and Mrs.
    Burt Brown of Homer.
    The funeral arrangements will be
    announced later, the interment to be
    made at Preble.
