George HOARD and his second wife, Sally WILLIAMS, settled in Potter in 1802 on lot 9 of the fourth farm range. He was from Rhode Island, and she from Stephentown. They had a son, Benoni, who married a daughter of Capt. THOMAS, a solider killed in the War of 1812. Benoni died in 1831 and his wife in 1827, leaving two sons. By a former marriage, George HOARD had six sons: James, George, David, John, Justus and Amos, all of whom married, resided in Potter and finally moved West.

John Hoard, if we remember correctly, was born in Rhode Island, came to the State of New York in an early day, and there married Patience McNeer. They had eight children, whose names were Alva B., Celestia, Anna, Charles, Diana, Abigail, Amos, and Nancy, He came to Auburn with his family about 1830, and settled in Auburn valley, on the Cowles tract, where he remained until 1848, when he sold out, and moved west of the State road, and lived with his youngest son until he died in 1854. Mrs. Hoard survived her husband a number of years, but died several years since.

"Chester Hoard, the remaining one of this doomed trio, while repairing the boots of a comrade at Somerset, became suddenly ill. Laying aside his work, as he supposed, for a short time, he betook himself to his blanket. Becoming rapidly worse, an ambulance was called, and Chester was helped therein, apologizing to the owners of the boots for the failure, saying, as he started for the hospital: 'Boys, keep a stiff upper lip. I'll be after you in a few days, and then I'll finish them boots.' He did not leave that fated hospital, till he left it in his coffin, bound for the land of his nativity.

Albany, Green County Wisconsin Vindicator, Thursday, March 12, 1896 Alva D. Hoard was born in New York Oct. 17, 1808 and died March 8, 1896, aged 87 years, 5 months and 8 days. He was married twice, first to Betsy Silvernail, of Auburn, Ohio. Four children were born to them--Jas. M., Charles H., Eliza J. and Emma E. He was married the second time to Elizabeth Wells, also of Auburn, Ohio, and this union was blessed with one son, William R. Mr. Hoard was a physician by professon, and when a young man often filled the pulpit in a very able manner. Many of our citizens remember of hearing him preach, or exhort in an earnest and convincing manner. For many years he made his hom with his favorite child, Emma (Mrs. Jas. Mitchell) until her death a few months ago broke up the family. A faithful Christian gentleman, his well known form will be long missed. The funeral was held at the residence of T.G. Mitchell Tuesday afternoon, and the remains laid to rest beside those of his daughter, who so recently preceded him to the better land.

Alva B. Hoard, eldest son of John Hoard, was born in the State of New York in 1808; was married in 1831, to Betsey Silvernail. They moved to Auburn in 1832, and took up their residence in Auburn valley. They had four children, whose names were James M., Eliza J., Mary M., and Charles H. Mr. Hoard was a physician of the botanic school, and had an extensive practice in Auburn and the surrounding townships. Dr. Hoard manufactured a liniment which was known in those early days, as Hoard's liniment, and was called one of the best liniments then in use. The doctor lost his wife in 1847, and was married again the same year, to Mary E. Wells. They had one child, whose name was William R. Dr. Hoard resided in Auburn until 1857, when he sold out, and moved to Wisconsin and Iowa, where he practiced several years, when he returned to Ohio, and is now practicing medicine at Chagrin Falls, Ohio.

Charles Hoard came to Auburn with his parents, and was married in 1836, to Lucy J., daughter of Jacob Ensign. They had five children, whose names were Permelia, John R., Charles N., Clarissa, and Frank. Mr. Hoard lived in different places in the township for several years, finally sold out and moved to Newbury, and died there in 1862. His widow is still living, and resides in Michigan.

Hervey N. Ensign, eldest son of Jacob Ensign, was born in Massachusetts; came to Auburn with his parents, and, about 1836, was married to Diana, daughter of John Hoard. They had one child -- Patience O. Previous to their marriage Mr. Ensign purchased land, on the Mills tract, in the north part of the township, on which they settled. Mrs. Ensign died there in 1874. In 1877, Mr. Ensign married, for his second wife, Vielda Smith, whose maiden name was Sweet, daughter of Henry and Joicy Sweet, and they now reside on the same farm where Mr. Ensign first settled.

Andrew Hoard:
A native of Ohio, was born May 7, 1840, of parents, Justice and Mariah (McClain) Hoard, deceased. He was married March 6, 1873, in Hillsdale county, Mich., to Magdalena Knecht, who was born in France June 30, 1852; her parents, both of whom have been called to their reward, were Christian and Saloma Knecht. One child was the issue of this union, Fred. When the war was declared between the North and South, our subject was engaged in farming; he was 24 years of age when he was enrolled from Detroit, Mich., Sept. 22, 1864, as a private in Co. D, 1st Mich. V.I., 1st Brig., 2d Div., 14th A.C. In the spring of 1865 he was detailed as guard at Brig. Hd. Qtrs. for two weeks. He also took part in the battles of Black Run and Bentonville besides considerable skirmishing, and was honorably discharged July 17, 1865, at Detroit, Mich. His wife had two brothers in service, Christian and Frederick, the latter was wounded at Fredericksburg; her father served in the French army. Comrade Hoard is a member of G.A.R.; he is a farmer by occupation and his address is Bronson, Mich.

Andrew HOARD

Andrew HOARD is a representative farmer and citizen of Hillsdale Co. He is pleasantly located in Ransom Twp. on the 50 acre farm which he has owned and cultivated since his arrival in this State. He was born May 7, 1840, in Burton, Geauga Co., OH. His father, Justus Hoard was born and reared in NY State from whence he moved to Geauga Co. where he rented land and farmed until 1844. In that year he came to Hillsdale Co. and settled in Ransom Twp., purchasing 40 acres of timber land. Seven acres of the tract were cleared and held a log cabin into which the family moved. Over the years Mr. Hoard added 40 more acres to his farm and continued to clear, cultivate and improve the property until the time of his death, Dec. 23, 1876. The wife of Justus Hoard was born Maria McLEAN in PA. She too died at the homestead in Ransom.
The parental family included eight children. They made the journey from Ohio to Mich. with a pair of horses and a wagon in which the household goods and family were carried. Upon their arrival the father sold the horses and bought oxen with which he did his farmwork, marketing and milling. The log cabin in which they first lived was very primitive. At one end was a mammoth fireplace with a giant chimney. Here the meals were cooked with the aid of a "crane" to which the pots and kettles were attached. They could then be swung into or out of the fire without endangering the cook. Besides giving plenty of heat these large fires also furnished light around which the female members of the household did the knitting for the family while the boys studied their lessons. Mrs. Hoard was a very industrious woman who spun, knit and made all the family clothing and also assisted her husband in farm duties.
The schools in those days were also very plain log buildings, resembling the homes. The benches were slabs of wood. Other slabs, attached to the walls, made desks. Andrew attended the very first school ever taught in this district and, as soon as he was large enough, was removed from school to work on the farm. In spite of meagre education, young people received in the rugged school of experience those lessons of discipline and self-denial which have given them great strength of character.
On Mar. 6, 1873, Andrew married Miss Magdalene KNECHT, who was born in France June 30, 1852. She was the daughter of Christien Knecht, also a native of France, who served several years in the French Army. He came to America in 1852 and at once traveled to Amboy Twp., this county, where he bought a tract of timber land and there lived until 1880. Then he sold out and removed to Davis Co., MO, where he made his home until his death Mar. 6, 1884. His wife, Solema ZIMMERMAN, was also a native of France and is still living (1888) with a daughter in KS. Mr. and Mrs Hoard have two children, Justus H. and Fred. They belong to the Free Methodist Church. In politics, Mr. H. is a Republican.

"B. F. Clark, known by the boys as ' Frank,' was the next sacrifice. The terrible ordeal through which he passed, before, at, and after the battle of Mill Spring, proved too much for his not over robust constitution, and when his command left Somerset, Kentucky, Frank did not go, but reluctantly took up his abode at the hospital. The next we heard from him he was very sick; the next, he was dead.

"Eulogizing our soldier boys properly is far beyond my capacity for doing, with any degree of justice. Suffice it to say that, among our many kind-hearted boys, Frank was one of the kindest.

"By a strange fatuity, three near relatives--of whom comrade Clark was one --were taken in succession, and all three were members of the same command.

"The next to go was Henry Green, nephew of the other two. Henry was a favorite at headquarters, which is equivalent to saying he was a good soldier. Soon after reaching Cumberland Ford, the measles broke out in camp, and Green was among the victims of the disease. Becoming convalescent, he was detailed to go with his mule team to Flat Lick after a load of provisions. While on the way, he was caught in a shower, when the disease returned with redoubled severity, and after two days of intense suffering he was numbered among the dead. Dying at the house of a citizen, he was buried in the family grounds. Henry died March 15, 1862. Let me copy from my diary the following: 'Sunday, April 6th, Durfee and I made a head-board for Henry Green's grave, and I took it to Flat Lick and set it up.' If any are curious to know more about that head-stone, let me say that it was made of a section of the head of a bacon cask, and 'H. Green, Ninth Ohio battery,' was the inscription.

"Chester Hoard, the remaining one of this doomed trio, while repairing the boots of a comrade at Somerset, became suddenly ill. Laying aside his work, as he supposed, for a short time, he betook himself to his blanket. Becoming rapidly worse, an ambulance was called, and Chester was helped therein, apologizing to the owners of the boots for the failure, saying, as he started for the hospital: 'Boys, keep a stiff upper lip. I'll be after you in a few days, and then I'll finish them boots'. He did not leave that fated hospital, til he left it in his coffin bound for the land of his nativity.

Died-at the family residence, near this city, on Wednesday evening, Nov. 6, 1805 [1895], Mary E., wife of James Mitchell, aged 48 years, 10 months and 17 days. Mary E. Hoard was born in Ohio Dec. 20, 1846. She was married to Jas. Mitchell 32 years ago, and was the mother of one son, Arthur B. For a number of years, Mrs. Mitchell has been in poor health, being at times a great sufferer from rheumatism, but she bore it all with Christian fortitude. About 12 years ago she experienced religion, and has since been a consistent follower of her Savior. Her last illness was of short duration and it was not thought the end was so near; but the disease took a fatal turn, and after hours of intense pain, she passed away as above stated. In her death the community has lost a kind hearted and sympathetic friend and neighbor, always ready to lend a helping hand in case of sickness or trouble. The funeral was held from the M.E. Church Saturday afternoon, the services being conducted by the pastor, and the remains tenderly laid to rest in the Albany cemetery. Her husband, son and aged father, with many other relatives, are left to mourn their loss.
