    Wright, Hon. Nathaniel, Lowell, Mass., Nov. 5, te. f his professional business; and subsequently purchased his (Mr. S.'s) residence, which he occupied during the remainder of his life. e attained to a high rank in his profession as an able and well-read lawyer. For forensic display he had little taste, and made no pretension, but when an emergency required a sound, reliable, and disinterested opinion, he was the dependence of his community for many vears. Singularly simple and almost blunt in his manners, and sparing of words, there was an honesty and independence about him which won confidence and secured respect. On the organization of the town of Lowell, Mr. W.'s judgment, counsel, and legal knowledge were*Under great and constant requisition. He performed an important part in the preliminary purchase of land by the founders of the town, and in settmg it off from Chelms- ford he was an efficient agent. When Lowell was incorporated as a town in 1826, he was elected its first representative in the legislature, and was reelected the two following years. He was also chosen chairman of the first board of selectmen. In 1834 he was elected to the state Senate'from Middlesex district. In 1836 Lowell was incorporated as a city, and Mr. W. was elected its mayor m 1841 and 1842. On the organization of the Lowell Bank in 1828, he was elected first president, an office which he held uninterruptedlv for more than 30 years, resigning it only on the 22d of October, 1858, just two weeks before his death. In all the positions which he filled he gave entire satisfaction to those whose interests were intrusted to his care. He married, March 5, 1820, Laura Hoar. They had five children, four sons and one daughter, viz., Nathaniel, Thomas, William Henry Prentice, Emery, and Laura Grace. Two of his sons, Nathaniel and Thomas, graduated at Harvard College in 1838 and 1842 respectively. Nathaniel was a lawyer in Lowell, "and died Sept . 18, 1847, ?Ce. 27. The others are still living. Thomas is a lawyer in Lawrence, Mass. Mr. W.'s wife died Jan. 21, 1857, ae. 62.

    William H. P. Wright, son of Nathaniel Wright, was born in Lowell, Mass., in 1827, and was educated at the public schools. In 1847 he went to Lawrence, Mass., where his brother Thomas, recently established in the law, was about to open an office, and entered on his law studies in the office of Daniel Sauuders and later in that of Wright & Flanders, a firm of which his brother was the senior member. He was admitted to the Essex county bar in 1849 and settled in Lawrence for life. He was early in his practice appointed clerk of the Lawrence Police Court and subsequently associate justice of that court. In 1861 and 1862 he was chosen mayor of the city, and the duties devolving on him at the beginning of the war were promptly and ably performed. In 1867 and 1868 he was a representative, and for ten years or more afterwards he was actively engaged in the practice of his profession. He married a daughter of Thomas Gerrish of Lowell, and died in Lawrence in 1891.
