"The school-house in the middle of the town was struck off to Captain Jonathan Hoar ; and at the March meeting, 1795, the selectmen were appointed a committee to consult with him in building the same. The location was on the hill, near the spot on which the second meeting-house stood : hence it was afterwards called School-house Hill. It would seem that Mr. Hoar exceeded his obligation in the finishing of the house ; for, in 1796, the town voted to pay him " ten dollars for the work done to the school-house more than his bond obliged him to do."

Dear Mrs. Starr:
I am preparing copy to print a genealogy of the descendants of
Hezekiah Horr of Taunton, Mass., and before closing the work have made an
effort to include as many of his descendants as I could trace. Thinking
that Robert H. Horr, formally of Grand Rapids now of Enterprise, Miss.,
might belong to that family, I wrote to him. He tells me that his grand-
father was Francis T. Horr who married Ruth Darby Allen; that they lived
in Delaware, and he refers me to you for further information.
If you have any knowledge of your ancestors back to Francis T.
Horr, please give me their names and places of residence. Perhaps I can
connect them with one of the older families whose records I have. I also
wish to know whether you ever heard of a man named James Horr
who was born in Delaware County about ninety-seven years ago. His father,
Josiah Horr, is said to have come from Massachusetts. My informant who
is somewhat illiterate states that James Horr had in Delaware County
four brothers and two sisters, viz: Josiah, John, Francis and Joseph; and
Lucy and Olive. I suspect that my informant, Nathan Horr of Kansas City,
Kansas, is one of your relations. And that his grandfather Francis was
a brother of your grandfather.
Any information you can give me will be very acceptable and I

Death of Mr. Horr - It is with surprise
that we learn of the death of Mr. John Horr
of Licking township in this county. He died
on the morning of January the 1st, of a dis-
ease of the brain contracted while visiting the
hospitals of Louisville, and looking after a
sick son, a member of the 97th Ohio Regiment.
Mr. H was a native of Waltham, Massachu-
setts, but at a very early period of his life his
family came to this county, where he grew
up to manhood, and almost to old age. At
different times he has been an extensive deal-
er in stock, which indeed he had not entirely
relinquished at the time of his death. His ill-
ness was short and severe.
The members of the Irville Lodge of Ma-
sons, attended his funeral on the 2nd of Jan-
uary, for which act of brotherly sympathy Mr.
Horr's friends are very grateful.

"Mr. Fisher rose and made the following remarks:
Mr. Speaker : It becomes my painful duty to announce that Mr. Francis Horr, my colleague, and member elect in the other branch of this General Assembly, is now no more. About four weeks since, he was attacked with a malignant fever, which confined him to his bed, and from which he never rose, but expired on the 11th instant, at 10 o'clock, P. M., surrounded by friends, but leaving a bereaved wife and five or six small children to mourn the loss of a beloved husband and kind and tender parent. Mr. Horr was a native of Maine, but had resided in the county of Delaware, in this State, (from which he was a representative,) near thirty years. He had been, for a number of years previous to his decease, an exemplary member of the Methodist Episcopal Church, and died in the full confidence of a Christian's hope. He was in the vigor of manhood when, in the providence of God, he was taken from his family and numerous acquaintances. My personal acquaintance with Mr. Horr had existed but a few months previous to his decease, but even that short period had awakened in my bosom feelings of the warmest friendship. Although Mr. Horr did not profess to have talents of a high and brilliant order, yet his moral and social qualities were seldom equalled. As a husband, he was kind and affection ; as a parent, he was honored and beloved; and as a citizen and a neighbor, he was universally esteemed and respected ; and all classes will long mourn their irreparable loss. He is gone, and, I trust, to a brighter and better world ; but he has left to his family a rich legacy, in a character without reproach, and a name without a blemish. He has lett us, but his example and his virtues remain for our emulation.
Mr. Fisher then offered the following resolutions, which were adopted:
Resolved, That we deeply sympathize with the family and friends of the Hon. Francis Horr, late a member of the Senate, in their bereavement, in this dispensation of the providence of God.
Resolved, That the members and officers of the House of Representatives testify their respect for the memory of the deceased, by wearing crape on the left arm for thirty days."

Bio:
Mrs. Lucy Baughman died at her home in Oak Point, April 27th, 1896.
Mrs. Baughman, with her husband, David, was one of the earliest settlers of Johnson township. She was born in Deleware county, Ohio, Sept. 16th, 1821. Her maiden name was Lucy Buck, and she was the second daughter of Andrew and Olive (Horr) Buck. She was married to Mr. Baughman, May 6, 1841, and a week or so afterward started in a two-horse wagon to seek a location in a new country and to build themselves a future home. After about two week's travel, they located on section 20 of this township, on the 16th day of June. A rough log cabin was soon built, which was little more than a shelter from the elements, into which they moved. It had no floor, except the bare earth, nor windows and as for a door, it was simply a hole cut through the logs and no plank shutters, the aperture being closed with a quilt or blanket. It was the time of year to put in a crop and until this was done everything not necessary was dispensed with. Later plank was provided and both a floor and door and a few shelves were added to their primitive home. In this house they lived some ten or twelve years, when the present brick structure was built almost on the exact site of their first cabin.
Her husband, and two out of eight children, remain to mourn their loss. In early life she was a member of the M. E. church in Ohio.
The funeral sermon was preached by Rev. G. H. Clymer of the Presbyterian church, in Casey, to a very large audience of friends and relatives who gathered at the old homestead to attend the funeral.
She bore her sickness which was of several months duration, with noble, christian fortitude. The best medical skill was employed, but to no purpose as she was verging on three score and ten years and that is the allotted time of the human family. She will be greatly missed by her aged husband, who has been her constant companion for almost fifty-five years, and in the words of the divine that delivered the funeral oration, we hope "That their loss is her eternal gain. The Western Spirit, Paola, Miami Co., Kansas, Friday, Sept. 4, 1891, page 3:
"Mr. R. B. Horr died at his home in this city last Saturday the 30th inst. at 2 a.m. He has been sick for over six weeks with fever and trouble from a white swelling on his leg. The deceased was an old settler having located in Paola 25 years ago and resided here ever since. He was born in Licking township, Muskingum county, Ohio, May 10th, 1835, and was therfore, in his 57th year. R. B. Horr and Miss Mary J. Allen were married in Licking Valley, Ohio, March 17th, 1859, and two daughters survive the father, Miss Eva Horr and Mrs. Hugh F. Riley, and reside here. To Mrs. Horr and family neighbors and friends extends sympathy in their bereavement. Mr. Horr was an honest, useful man who was respected throughout the county. The funeral services were conducted at the Catholic church by Rev. Father Quick and a large concourse of people followed the remains to the city cemetery on Monday last."

FIFTH INDEPENDENT CAVALRY BATTALION
(Six Months)
Fifth Independent Cavalry Battalion. - Maj., John F. Ijams. This battalion, composed of four companies, was organized at Columbus from July 9 to Sept. 2, 1863, to serve for six months. Co. A participated in checking the advance of Morgan in southern Ohio, and after his capture returned to Camp Chase. When the battalion was completed it was sent into eastern Kentucky to protect the citizens from the raids of the guerrillas that infested that part of the state. It captured a number of the most noted and broke up their bands which result brought peace and security to the inhabitants. It did not participate in any regular battle because there was no organized force pitted against it. It was mustered out on Feb. 15, 1864, at Cincinnati, Ohio, on expiration of term of service.

page 370 Earle, Alice Morse, author, was born in Worcester, Mass., April 27, 1853; daughter of Edwin and Abby Mason (Clary) Morse; granddaughter of Benjamin and Elizabeth (Hoar) Morse; and a descendant of Capt. Humphrey Atherton, Capt. Hugh Mason, Capt. Jonathan Hoar, the Hon. Richard Heard and the Hon. William Browne. She was graduated from the Worcester high school in 1872 and in 1874 was married to Henry Earle of Brooklyn, N.Y. She is the author of: The Sabbath in Puritan New England (1891); China Collecting in America (1892); Customs and Fashions in Old New England (1893); Early Prose and Verse of New York (with E. E. Ford, 1893); Costume of Colonial Times (1894); Life of Margaret Winthrop (1894); Diary of Anna Green Winslow (edited, 1894); Colonial Dames and Goodwives (1895); Curious Punishments of Bygone Days (1896); Colonial Days in Old New York (1896); Old Narragansett (1898); Home Life in Colonial Days (1898); Child Life in Colonial Days (1899).
