Sarah was married near her 18th birthday. Sarah and Robert were married over 50 years. They had 12 children in 24 years. Sarah was about 45 years old at the birth of her last child, Judith. Judith was born near Sarah's birthday and two days before her 25th wedding anniversary. This couple buried one child, Peter in 1786. I have not been able to locate descendants of son Willis or daughter Sarah. JVS

"Warren Horr [Sr.] went with his father to New Salem, Franklin Co MA, then moved to Shutsbury, [Hampshire Co, now Franklin Co] MA where he was at one time town treasurer, and later to Lewis County NY with his brothers, Jacob and Robert Horr. He was a millwright, and blind for forty years." -Norton T. Horr.

I have no other indication Warren went to New York than Norton's book. Warren's father, Robert II Horr, was listed on the 1810 census for Denmark, Lewis Co, NY. His brother Jacob's son Elijah was born in Lewis Co New York 1804. His brother Robert moved to Lewis Co, NY about 1801-2, and is on the 1807 census for the west part of Denmark Twp. The 1810 New York census list Warren's siblings in their own households; Elizabeth, Israel, Sarah, and Isaac. Living with their parents were; Willis, Elijah, Mercy and Judith. Jacob was not listed as a head of household but another child was born there in 1812. Brother Robert had a child born in Ohio 1810.JVS

If Warren and Olive moved to New York they were back in New Salem MA by 1810. "Simeon Pierce of New Salem in the county of Hampshire, housewright, sells land in New Salem to Warren Hoar on 6 December 1808. (Franklin County, Massachusetts Deeds." (Note surname spellings.) I have their last child's 1813 birth as Denmark Lewis Co NY, but I question the location. Their eldest son Abner was listed on the 1820 Denmark, Lewis Co NY Census as head of household. Son Warren remained in New Salem, Franklin Co, MA to raise his family. Daughter Olive raised her family in mostly in Greenfield, Franklin Co, MA. Another son Marcus also went to Denmark, Lewis Co, NY to raise his family and was listed there for the 1840 census as a head of household.JVS

Warren and Olive buried seven of their ten children. Olive was pregnant with her fifth child (Hannah) when two (possibly three) of their four children died in April 1799. Daughter Hannah died two years later and then in 1808 their eighth child died as an infant. Olive was 38 yrs old at the birthing of her last child. They lost two daughters as adults. Warren became blind about the time their last three children were born. If Warren was blind the full 40 yrs then he was approx 47 yrs old when he lost his eyesight, 1816. .JVS

If this is true then Jacob was the first child of Robert and Sarah's to leave Massachusetts. It is said that brothers Warren and Robert with Jacob moved there about the same time.

Jacob moved to Ohio before 1818.

Jacob Horr had eleven children, of whom ten lived to be grown, but only three are now alive. They are, William Horr, of Mechanicsburg, Champaign County, Ohio ; Elijah Horr, of Carthage, Jefferson County, N. Y., and Josiah Horr, the subject of the present sketch. William Horr was the youngest son.

Her father, grandfather and great-grandfather, each bore the christian name of Robert, and her father and grandfather were each born in the same town of Plymouth and near Plymouth Rock.".... "In 1812 he moved to Niagara Falls."... Taking in the company with a seamster, they went to work, and with the help of a force of sewing girls, during the winter, furnished the soldiers a complete outfit. At the close of the war [abt 1815?] he came west and settled where Columbus, Ohio, is situated, and bought a tract of land on which the state penitentiary has since been built. In 1827 he sold his home and removed to Illinois, stopping the following winter with Gordon S. Hubbard and open a small store in Danville..." "The next spring Mr. Horr, accompanied by Hubbard, came and looked out of a place on the North Fork of the Vermilion, a little distance west of the present site of Mann's Chapel. He died on the 10th of August, 1834, age fifty three, 10 months."...

Major Warren Horr was born in New Salem, July 17, 1803, a son of Warren Horr who was at one time treasurer of the town of Shutesbury. His education was obtained at New Salem Academy, of which he was the oldest graduate at the time of his death. His early life was devoted to farming, and he was honored by his fellow townsmen with many positions of trust and responsibility, representing New Salem in the Legislature of 1850, and also served the town as selectman, assessor and overseer of the poor for seven years in succession. Actively interested in the old militia he held the office of major, and was elected colonel, which office he declined. He removed to Athol in 1857 and engaged in the grocery business with J. W. Hunt and J. F. Packard for a few years, and then gave his attention to agricultural pursuits. In 1826 he married Sally P. Sloan, a sister of Jonathan W. Sloan. She died in 1868 and in 1869 he married Mrs. Harriet Townsend. He had one child, George W. Horr. He was the oldest member of the Masonic fraternity in this section, having been made a Mason in Golden Rule Lodge, New Salem, in 1826. His life and character may be summed up in the following words: He was a just man, a true man, and a Christian. He died Feb. 14, 1890.

ELIJAH HORR.- Few men have lived in Carthage and been more closely identified with its business interests for so many consecutive years as the subject of this sketch. He came to the village in 1831, when only 27 years of age, and all his subsequent life was wrought into its growth and prosperity. The progenitors of the family--the name until the last two generations was spelled "Hoar"--came from England to Massachusetts in the 17th century. The Massachusetts branch have always adhered to the original orthography, and as is well known, have been prominent in the history of the old Bay State and of the nation for many years, Hon. George F. Hoar being the senior Senator of the Commonwealth today, and one of the most eminent men in the councils of the Nation.
Elijah Horr's branch of the family came into Northern New York in the latter part of the last century, and settled in Denmark, Lewis county. Here Elijah was born November 24, 1804, and was reared like farmer's boys of the period, attending, for a brief time during the winter, a common school, and laboring the balance of the year upon the farm. He was a steady, ambitious boy, attaining his physical growth very early. He led his father's men in the hay and harvest field when he was 15 years of age, and as a consequence, before he was 18, his health became almost completely broken for the time, and he had entailed upon his constitution infirmities from which he ever afterward suffered. Not being sufficiently robust for a farmer, he attended, for several terms, Lowville Academy, securing by this change a better education than was usual to most of the young men of that section at that time. Upon his return from school he entered the store of Mr. Norton.
At the age of 23 years he married Miss Gertrude Vedder, who was descended, through the Vedders and Van Vlecks, from the old Knickerbocker stock of New York. Soon after, he moved to Carthage, then nothing but a hamlet upon the Long Falls of Black river. After a short time he opened a general store, and continued in the business of a merchant, at brief intervals, on account of impaired health, for more than 30 years. Subsequently, for some years, in company with Orlin Holcomb, he carried on a general banking business until his 70th year, when a stroke of partial paralysis closed his active business career. He lived for six years after this, attending to his private business until his death, December 27, 1880.
In early life Mr. Horr identified himself with the Methodist Episcopal Church. For more than 40 years he was an official member of the Carthage church, attending scrupulously its services and contributing largely of his means for its general expenses, and towards the building of two church edifices. He believed steadfastly in the doctrines and discipline of that church, but was wholly free from bigotry, and rejoiced in the prosperity of the churches of all names. He was a man of very positive convictions in both religious and political affairs, but was charitable towards the opinions of others. As a business man he was universally respected and honored. He was indefatigable in his devotion to his business interests, never allowing anything but the claims of his religious life to engross his time or claim his attention, giving himself almost no recreation, but finding his pleasures in his work. He was a man of unusual balance of faculties, his judgments seldom needing revision. During the more than 40 years of his active business life, he passed through three serious financial panics, with untarnished honor and unweakened credit. He never took any active part in politics, other than to do his simple duty as a citizen. From the organization of the Republican party, he was identified with its interests, and thoroughly believed in, and endeavored to promote its policies. The evening twilight of his long and useful life was calm and beautiful. He rested in the border-land, quietly and in hope, after the unremitting toils of a busy life. His last words, as his soul went out into the unknown, were: "Thy rod and Thy staff they comfort me." The family consisted of nine children, all living until the youngest was over 21 years of age, viz: John Wesley, who died March 31, 1875; Walter Ashley, of Great Bend; Hannah, wife of C. E. Francis, of Carthage; Sarah, widow of Rev. Spencer R. Fuller, who died September 16, 1870; Rev. Elijah, D.D., of Worcester, Mass.; Albert Vedder, who died July 26, 1882; Gertrude, wife of John T. Connell, of Grand Island, Neb.; Louise Stewart, who died March 10, 1872, and Charles Abner, who resides at Carthage.

WILLIAM HORR, retired farmer; P. O. Mechanisburg; a prominent citizen and early settler, was born in Lewis Co., N. Y., in 1812, and is the son of Jacob and Hannah (Pierce) Horr, both natives of Massachusetts and early emigrants to York State; Jacob was a farmer by occupation, and became a resident of this county in June, 1838, and, soon after, a resident of Wyandot Co., where his death occurred Dec. 26, 1847; the death of his wife occurred Nov. 24, 1839, in the State of Illinois, where she had gone on a visit; he had a family of eight sons and one daughter, only three of whom still survive. Our subject was the seventh child of the family, and was early taught the art and dignity of farming; be lived in his native State till 1838, when he immigrated to Ohio, locating within sight of his present place, to which he moved-twenty-six years ago. The pursuit of agriculture has been his occupation, and in it he has been successful. He finds his political creed in the Republican party, and religious in the M. P. Church. He has at different times been prominently identified with the county and township offices, holding the positions of County Commissioner, Land Appraiser, and several times Township Assessor. The duties of these offices he has discharged with strict integrity and fidelity. He married Mary Coan [correct spelling is "Cone", not "Coan" ], of New York, March 11, 1835 ; five sons and three daughters have been the issue of this union, two of whom have died, one in infancy, and the other, a son, died in the late civil war from the effects of a wound received in the battle at Port Republic, Va.; he lived just one month, dying at Washington City.

A Biographical record of Clark County, Ohio
CALVIN A. HORR.
Calvin Auburn Horr was for many years a prominent factor in business circles of
Springfield and at his death he left to his family not only the splendid financial result
of his labors but also an untarnished name. Everywhere in our land are found men who
have worked their own way from humble beginnings to leadership in the commerce, the
great productive industries, the management of financial affairs, and in controlling the
veins and arteries of the traffic 'and exchanges of the country. It is one of the glories of our nation that it is so. It should be the strongest incentive and encouragement to the youth of the country that it is so. Prominent among the self-made men of Ohio was the subject of this sketch, a man honored, respected and esteemed wherever known and most of all where he was best known.
Mr. Horr was 'born in Denmark, New York, August 9, 1818, and was a son of Jacob Horr, of Scotch descent. The schoolhouse which he attended was three miles from his home. He had limited opportunity for acquiring an education for his services were needed upon the home farm. He was the youngest in a family of nine children and with one exception all were sons. At the age of fourteen years he went to Mechanicsburg,
Ohio, living with his brother, Dr. Obed Horr, until he went to Jeffersonville, where he engaged in, the drygoods business for a time and then returned to Mechanicsburg,
where he again became a drygoods merchant in partnership with his brother, Dr. Horr. He came to Springfield to purchase the right of way for the Springfield, Mount Vernon & Pittsburg Railroad Company, of which he was the secretary and treasurer. His association with that company continued for a number of years and in its behalf he went to' Europe, where he spent five months, purchasing railroad iron for the construction of the road. On the expiration of that period he returned to his native land in the month of March, 1861, but sold his interest in the road in the same year. The following year Mr. Horr became a member of the firm of Wright, Horr & Bacon, wholesale grocers, and continued in that business up to the time of his death, which occurred January 21, 1873. He was a very successful business man and conducted a number of enterprises. For years he devoted his entire time and concentrated all his energies toward the supervision of the active details of his business and his was the heart to resolve, the understanding to direct, and the hand to execute all its various transactions. He also became the owner of considerable city real estate.
Mr. Horr was twice married. He first wedded Mazey Ann Owens and they became the parents of three children: Luvenia;, Llewellyn, who is living in Oklahoma; and Elijah, who died in childhood. On the 11th of December, 1845, Mr. Horr was again married, his second union being with Miss. Elizabeth Morgan, a most estimable lady, who was to him a. faithful companion and helpmate on life's journey and who still survives him.. She was a native of the city of London and in 1832, when twelve years of age, was a passenger on a westward bound sailing vessel, which dropped anchor in the harbor of New York, after a voyage of seven weeks. She came with her parents, Thomas
and Mary Morgan. Unto the second marriage five children were born : Louise, who is
now the wife of L. C. Smith, of Saginaw, Michigan; Laura, who became the wife of
Jonathan Harshman and now lives with her mother, her husband having died in 1S74;
Lucien, who is married and has five (children, and lives in Ogclen City, Utah; Mary
L., whoi was at home; and Lillian, the widow of Edward C. Leffel. She also resides
with her mother and has lost her only only son, James, who died at the age of
eighteen years.
Mr, Horr possessed many admirable qualities. His record was that of a man who by his own unaided efforts worked hisway upward to a position of affluence. His life was one of industry and perseverance and the honorable and systematic businessmethods
which he followed won him the esteem and confidence of many. Without the
aid of influence or wealth he rose to a leading position in Clark county and his native genius and unremitting diligence formed the stepping-stone on which he mounted.

Lincoln News Column: Died, October 31st, Mr. Warren Horr, father of Mrs. Hiram Brigham, at his daughter's home, near Pilot Knob. The funeral was held Sunday. Elder Helms preached the funeral sermon. Mr. Horr has a son, Mr. Austin Horr, living nearby.

he has been a member of tae Seventh-day Adventist church at
Plainfield. During the last few weeks of his illness, he stayed
with his daughter, Mrs. Hiram Brigham, and while there we
had strong evidence that the Spirit of the Lord was with him ;
and it was often remarked by those who attended him, that they
never saw any one, under such circumstances, as patient as he.
He died in full hope of having a part in the first resurrection.

DIED.--On Saturday at the residence of D. B. Padelford, after a lingering illness, Mrs. Hannah Pierce aged 77 years the 13th of this month. She is the mother of Mrs. D. B. Padelford with whom she has made her home for a number of years. She was born in Watertown, N. Y. to which place the remains were taken for interment. She was married to Mr. Pierce 50 years ago with whom she lived 30 years. She has been a member of the Universalist church for about forty years and died in the full hope of a home the realms where there shall be no more parting of friends. The funeral services were conducted at the residence of Mr. Padelford by Rev. Groat who gave an excellent sermon on the subjects usual to such occasions.

"Mr Orwel C. Horr, was born in Denmark, Lewis Co New York, and when he was about nine years old the family moved to Mechanicsburg, Ohio, and in a few more years to Danville, Illinois, where at the age of fifteen [probably eighteen] he lost his parents and was thrown entirely on his own resources. In the spring of 1840 being then twenty-four years of age, he joined the "march of empire" and settled in Platt City, Missouri and in 1856 on account of slavery, he again moved westward and with his family settled in Atchison, Kansas then the limits of a vast wilderness. He had been up the Missouri as early as 1836 and obtained permission of Rubidoux, the commander of the trading post, where St. Joseph now stands to land.
In the fall of 1858 he again moved with his family to Marysville, in our county, where he engaged in the mercantile business and remained until Frankfort was laid out; then on 20 Jan 1868 he came to our city, where he has remained ever since."
In Jan 1888 his sister Mrs N. Gilbert spent last winter in Frankfort, will spend this winter in Florida." Note the obituary does not state who his wife and children were.

HENRY C. HORR. Prominent among the business houses of Frankfort, is the general merchandising establishment which bears the firm name of O. C. Horr & Sons, and in which the subject of this sketch is now senior partner. The firm carries on business in an elegant two-story stone edifice, with plate glass front, the main portion of which occupies a space of 38x100 feet, and the two additions being 15x80 and 20x30. The buildings represent an outlay of $12,000, and contain a stock costing over $25,000. The latter consists of dry goods, boots and shoes, hats and caps, gentlemen's furnishing goods and groceries. The establishment is in a very prosperous condition, and the members of the firm, H. C. and T. C. Horr, both of whom are popular as business men and citizens, are proving themselves worthy successors of their honored father, whose name is still retained by the firm.
The grandfather of our subject was Robert Horr, a general merchant in Boston, and also in Meclianicsburg, Ohio. As the name indicates, he was of English ancestry. During the war of 1812 he was Colonel of a New York regiment, which served in the campaign against the British in Lower Canada. During the later years of his life he lived at Danville. 111., and was engaged in the stock business. His son, O. C. Horr, father of our subject, was a native of Lewis County, N. Y., and was but twelve years of age when his father removed to Illinois. When but sixteen years old he began life for himself, by engaging as a drug clerk with Dr. Fithian, in Danville, and continued in that employment for two years. lie next engaged in the stock business, driving cattle and horses to Cincinnati, which was at that time the great stock market of the West. After two or three years spent in this way, he turned his face westward, arriving in St. Joseph, Mo., in 1837. After remaining a short time, prospecting with a view to locating, he went back to Illinois. He soon returned to Missouri, however, and located at Platte City, Platte County. Shortly after settling there, he secured a contract for outfitting Government trains, preparatory to journeys over the almost unexplored wilderness west of the Missouri, and he also engaged in freighting. At that time Ft. Leavenworth was an important frontier military post, and Mr. Horr's business brought him into familiar contact with Gen. Leavenworth, Col. Doniphan, Gen. Atchison, and other leading military men and civilians of the then Far AVest.
During his residence at Platte City, in July, 1847, O. C. Horr was married to Elizabeth Jane, daughter of T. O. Rader. She was a native of Pennsylvania, and of Pennsylvania Dutch descent. In 1856 he moved to Atchison, where he continued in the business of outfitting Government trains, and also furnished emigrant outfits. After a sojourn of four years he came to the then recently established town of Marysville, now the county seat of this county. He was one of the earliest and most prominent business men of the place, in which he remained until 18G8. At that time he transferred his business of general merchandising to Frankfort. He began business in a frame building, where the State bank is now situated. It was a one-storv structure, 22x80 feet. After a year spent in that location he erected a frame building 20x60, on the site now occupied by his sons, and in 1887 that edifice gave way to the present beautiful buildin"1 He continued to reside in Frankfort until his death, which took place Aug. 7, 1887, at the age of seventy-four. His widow still survives him. Mr. Horr was a very successful man, and during his life maintained a high reputation for Uprightness, integrity, and honorable business methods. His prosperity was the result of his own efforts and good judgment. lie Was a Mason and an Odd Fellow, a member of the School Board, and was Postmaster of Frankfort during the latter part of Johnson's administration, and all of Grant's first term. He was prominently identified with every enterprise calculated to advance the interests of the city.
Mr. and Mrs. O. C. Horr were the parents of seven children. The two eldest are members of the firm before alluded to. Aurelia M. is single, and lives with her mother; Elizabeth J. is the wife of W. W. Lane, a salesman in the dry-goods establishment of D. C. Newcomb, at Atchison, Kan.; Lillian E. is the wife of T. H. Lainhart, a merchant in Alban', Mo.; Orwell S. is unmarried, and rerides in Frankfort, participating in the business of the firm; Adell is single, and living at home.
Henry C. Horr, the subject of this sketch, was born in Platte County, Mo., Sept. 14, 1848. His boyhood and youth were passed in Platte City, and Atchison, Kan., in the common schools of which he received the greater part of his education. After his parents' removal to Maryville, this county, he finished the High School course in that place. It might almost be said of him that he was raised behind the counter, as he early began assisting his father in the store. When he was twenty years of age his father gave him and his brother, Thomas C.. each a share in the business. In that year (1868) they adopted the firm name under which the business is still continued. On Jan. 23, 1877, the marriage of our subject took place, the bride being Amanda E., daughter of Amos and Harriett (Wolf) Flin. (See sketch of Amos Flin, which occupies another page in this Album). The young lady was a native of the Hoosier State, where she first saw the light June 19, 1854. She is a consistent member of the Presbyterian Church.
Thomas C. Horr, brother and partner of our subject, was born in Platte City, Mo., Oct. 22, 1849. and his boyhood and youthful history is similar to that of Henry C. In Frankfort, June 22, 1873,he celebrated his marriage to Ella, daughter of T. J and Mary E. Snodgrass. The bride was born in Ohio, Aug. 26, 1856. To Mr. and Mrs. T. C. Horr have been born two children. The parents are members of the Presbyterian Church.
Both the present members of the firm are to be found in the ranks of the Republican party. They are gentlemen of courteous address and cordial manner, of excellent business habits, prudent yet liberal, and stand high in the regard of their fellow-citizens.

ASA HORR, physician and surgeon, 872 Main street; is a native of Ohio, and was born Sept. 2, 1817; his parents were Isaac Horr and Nancy Smith Horr, both of New England stock. The father of Asa was an early settler in the Black River country, in New York, and opened a farm there prior to emigrating to Ohio; in the latter State he engaged in mercantile business, and afterward returned to New York in 1827, and died in Watertown, Jefferson Co., soon afterward. Up to the time his father died, Asa was kept at school most of the time, but now was put on a farm, and, for several years, attended schools only during the winter season; at the age of 20, he returned to his native town in Ohio and read medicine with a cousin; he attended lectures at two colleges in that State, and graduated from both; after leaving the Cleveland College, he practiced six years in Ohio and one in Illinois, and, in 1847, made a permanent settlement in Dubuque, Iowa; not content with a mastery of the science of medicine, in which he has given no inconsiderable attention to the investigation of sciences collateral to medicine, quite early in life, he studied botany with a good degree of success, and for more than twenty years was one of the leading observers for the Smithsonian Institution; he was influential in originating, and prominent in building up, the Iowa Institute of Science and Arts in Dubuque, and has been its President for the last eight or nine years; he is a man of decidedly scientific tastes and of high attainments. Dr. Horr is a member of the Iowa State Medical Society, of the American Association for the Advancement of Science, of the American Public Health Association, and of several scientific societies in the Upper Mississippi Valley; he is identified with many important interests in Dubuque. Its town clock was procured mainly through his exertions; the clock and the regulation of time have been since then entirely under supervision; and the true longitude of the city was established through him ten of twelve years ago, by the aid of his fine astronomical transit. Dr. Horr is one of the leading surgeons in Northern Iowa, and neither his practice nor his reputation in this line is limited to any one State. He was Post Surgeon at Dubuque in the early part of the late war and Examining Surgeon for recruits in the regular army. He has been a member of the Masonic Order since 1856. In politics, he was a Whig until the extinction of that party, since which time he has been a Republican; till middle life his religious views were orthodox; they are now liberal. He married Miss Eliza Sherman in 1841; she died in 1866. He married Mrs. EmmaF. Webber in 1868; she died in 1879; he has three children, all by his first wife. His eldest child, Augusta S., is the wife of Henry Hackbusch, a civil engineer and surveyor at Leavenworth, Kan.; Edward W. is a leading merchant in Blandville, Ky., and the youngest child, May, lives at home. pg.812

ASA HORR, M. D., who has had a long and a successful career as a medical practitioner in Dubuque, has been located here since August, 1847, being the oldest member of the profession in this locality. He is Chief of the Medical Staff of Mercy Hospital and belongs to the American Medical, the State and County and the Cedar Valley District Medical Societies. Several times he has been President of the County Association, of which he was one of the organizers. During the war he was Post Surgeon at Camp Franklin and also examined recruits for the regular army troops, being- later for ten years Pension Examiner ill this city. The Doctor is a noted scholar both in the languages and in many scientific departments.
Dr. Horr was born in Worthington, Franklin County, Ohio, in September 2, 1817. His paternal grandfather was a farmer in Massachusetts and removed to Lewis County, N. Y., in the early days of its history, when it was known as the Black River Country, and there he continued in agricultural pursuits until his death. The Horr family is of English descent and the name was originally spelt Hoar, but our subject's grandfather had the name changed by the Albany Legislature to its present spelling. The father of the Doctor bore the name of Isaac, and his birth occurred in the Bay State, where he grew to manhood and was married. He took part in the War of 1812, and five years later became a resident of Worthington, Ohio, having removed there from Lewis County, N. Y. He engaged in merchandising, being successful for several years, but about 1826 returned to Lewis County, N. Y., where he died one year later, aged forty-one years. His wife, Nancy Smith, was born and married in Salem, Mass., and after her husband's death in the Empire State returned to Ohio, where she died when in her sixty-ninth year. Eight of her ten children grew to maturity, but only four are now living, our subject and his three sisters. Leonard was a Captain in tile Twenty first Iowa Infantry until, his health failing, he retired, His death occurred in this city, where he had been engaged in the real-estate business.
Dr. Horr until ten years old lived in Ohio, where he attended Worthington College, of which Bishop Chase was Principal, and one of his classmates was Salmon P. Chase, late Chief Justice of the United States. In 1826 he returned to New York, and on his father's death the children were scattered, being taken by various relatives to bring up. From his earliest years he was a zealous student, and often worked by the light of hemlock and spruce knots. In working on the farm he hurried to complete his task in order that he might devote himself to his beloved books. His brother Leonard was a carpenter and it seemed best that he should be apprenticed to the same trade. He remained for six months working for one man, and during this time had become quite familiar with drafting. When he returned to the country he made a drawing and superintended the building of a frame house, this being when he was only fourteen years of age. His brother engaged with a contractor to build a large flouring mill in Canada, north of Kingston, and Asa went with him, working for about a year and receiving a man's wages. Later with his brother he engaged in contracting and building in Dundas, Canada, remaining there until 1836, and during this time the ambitious youth drew the principal plans of buildings which were put up by the firm.
The first time that the Doctor had thought seriously of entering the medical profession was during the cholera epidemic of 1834 - 35, when several of his employees contracted the disease, and as there were no physicians in the locality and he had assisted his mother, who was a good nurse in former years, he determined to use his best efforts for the afflicted men. Using the old fashioned remedies of smart weed and pennyroyal, with good nursing he managed to bring the men through all right and was often afterward annoyed by the many people who carne to him for treatment of various disorders. In 1836 Mr. Horr went to Ohio and entered the Worthington Medical College, from which he was graduated two years later with the degree of Doctor of Medicine. For two years subsequently he practiced with Dr. Hyland, of Fairfield County, and then for six years practiced in Baltimore, Ohio. In 1846 he graduated from the medical department of the Western Reserve University of Cleveland, receiving a degree.
With the intention of going to Galena, Ill., he visited a brother at Elizabeth, and was there prevailed upon to assist the doctors of the place during the epidemic which was prevalent. After a year's time he removed to Dubuque, arriving here in August, 1847, when this was a village of only two thousand inhabitants. Dr. Horr built an office at the corner of Fifth and Main Streets and has since conducted an extensive practice, his office being now at No. 1125 Main Street. For one year he was County Physician and is a member of the Public Health Association of the United States.
In Baltimore, Ohio, Dr. Horr was married in 1841 to Eliza Sherman, a native of Worthington. She was reared as a member of the Vinal family in Springfield and died in Dubuque during the war. Her three children are, Edward W., a merchant of Blandville, Ky.; Augusta S., Mrs. Hackbusch, who died in February, 1894; and May H., wife of Charles G. Sternes, of Waterloo, Iowa. The present wife of Dr. Horr, Mrs. Ella S. Booth, was born in Galena, Ill., and presides with true hospitality over her pleasant home at the corner of Thirteenth and Main Streets.
The Doctor is a fine botanist, geologist and astronomer. He has made large collections of Ohio and Iowa plants, has an interesting collection of geological specimens, and in 1864 erected a private astronomical observatory and was the first to determine accurately the longitude of Dubuque. A member of many learned societies, he has been President of the Iowa Institute of Science and Arts, and in company with J. M. Bigelow published a catalogue of the plants of Fairfield County, Ohio. For fifteen or twenty years Dr. Horr had charge of the city clock and took the time astronomically. He has the finest medical and chemical library in this portion of the state, and is an advocate of phonetic spelling. For some years he has been interested in real estate and owns a number of pieces of business property, as well as an interest in some coal mines. In politics he is independent, and fraternally is a Knight Templar Mason.

ADAM V. HORR (deceased), son of Abner Horr, was born in Lewis County, N.Y., December 26, 1819, and came to Shalersville, this county, at eighteen years of age with his parents. He first engaged in merchandising with his father, and as the latter's health was very much impaired, the main responsibility of the business devolved upon our subject. In 1842 he and Henry Beecher purchased the store, which they carried on jointly until 1845, when Mr. Beecher retired from the firm and Mr. Horr took possession of the entire business. He was united in marriage September 8, 1846, with Miss Rosella Beecher, born in Shalersville Township, this county, November 24, 1825, and daughter of Sylvester and Betsey (Bushnell) Beecher, and to this union have been born five children: Mrs. Irene R. Seymour, one son who died in infancy, Mrs. Isodene E. Oakley, William A. and Mrs. Adah V. Stough. Mr. Horr departed this life January 10, 1856. He was a man of rare business talents, and a very active citizen in the support of all worthy enterprises. He took an active interest in public affairs and held the position of Postmaster at Shalersville, this county, upward of fourteen years. In politics he was an ardent Republican. He was personally a genial companion, a true friend to the needy and a man of generous and noble impulses. He will long be remembered with tender respect by the citizens of Shalersville and vicinity. In April, 1861, Mrs. Horr removed to Ravenna, this county, where she still resides. Here she has devoted herself faithfully to the duty of bringing up and educating her family. She is a member of the Congregational Church, and is everywhere respected as a lady of estimable character.

GURDON L. HORR, produce merchant. Ravenna, was born July 6, 1842, in Shalersville, this county. His father, Abner Horr, of Salem, Mass., first married Miss Sarah Vedder, and after residing about eighteen years in Denmark, Lewis Co., N. Y., they came in 1835 to Shalersville, this county. There Mrs. Horr died in 1837, leaving three children: Warren, in Sterling. Kan., Adam V. (deceased), and Mrs. Nancy Tyler (deceased), wife of Judge Joel W. Tyler, of Cleveland, Ohio, and Mr. Horr then married, in 1838, Miss Lydia Horr, of Leyden, Lewis Co., N. Y., and their children are Gurdon L. and Mrs. Sarah Bedell, late of Cleveland, Ohio, latter of whom died February 9, 1885. Abner Horr carried on a general merchandising business in Shalersville, and had an interest in stores in Streetsboro, this county, and at Newton Falls. In 1843 he sold out, retired to his farm in that township, and there resided until his death, which occurred August 15, 1865. His widow resides in Cleveland, Ohio, with her son-in-law. Our subject received his education in his native town. He engaged in merchandising in partnership with the widow of Adam V. Horr, at Shalersville, this county, in 1862. He sold out his interest in 1872, and in 1874 located in Ravenna, in partnership with S. R. Freeman, in the produce business. Mr. Horr married, September 8, 1869, Miss Sarah Babcock, of Shalersville Township, daughter of the well-known pioneer, Edwin Babcock, and born August 2, 1847, in that township. To Mr. and Mrs. Hon have been born one daughter, Minnie, and one son, Burt . Our subject is a life-long Republican.

GEORGE WASHINGTON HORR, Lawyer, was born in New Salem, Massachusetts June 22, 1829, the son of Warren and Sally Peirce (Sloane) Horr, of old New England ancestry on both sides of the family. He received his early education in district and high schools, in Quaboag Seminary, Warren, Massachusetts, and New Salem Academy, qualifying him at the age of fifteen years to teach a district school, which he did for three winters. Continuing his studies at Phillips-Andover Academy he finished his preparation for College at Williston Seminary from which he was graduated in 1848, delivering the Salutatory oration of his class. In the same year he entered Harvard with the Class of 1852 ; was matriculated January 1 1, 1849, but did not continue to graduation. Instead, he became a special student in the Lawrence Scientific School of that L^niversity, and was thus enabled in 1856 to enter the field as a popular lecturer on astronomy, in which he continued, in addition to his other occupations, for a period of more than thirty years consecutively. He received the degree of Bachelor of Law in i860 as a graduate of the Law School of Harvard, was admitted to the Massachusetts Bar, at Greenfield, in the same year, and commenced practice in his native town, soon removing to .-Vlhol, where he has conducted a successful law business since that time. Notwithstanding his extensive GEORGE \\V. HORR professional business, he has always been engaged to a considerable extent in literary work, since 1854, when in company with the late Charles G. Colby he organized a literary bureau in Brooklyn, New York. He is the author of the histories of Athol, Petersham, Royalston, Phillipston, and Dana of 'orcester county, published in 1879, and was a contributor to tiie history of the same county published in 1889. He is the author of The Flora of Northern Worcester, illustrated, published in Picturesque Worcester, and is now engaged upon an extended history of New Salem Academy. Among the public addresses delivered by him, are those at the dedication of the Town Hallof Ervingin 1875, and of theTown Hall of Warwick in 1895 ; the Centennial Fourth of July UNIVERSITIES AND THEIR SONS ^7S address in Athol in 1876, and on tlie Worcester North West Fair Grounds in 1887; the first ad- dress delivered before the Worcester North West Agricultural and Mechanical Society after its incor- poration in 1867 ; the Memorial Day address at Hatfield in 1890; one at the annual meeting of the Pocumtuck Valley Memorial Association, of which he is a life member, in 1893, on Academic System of Schools in Massachusetts. Mr. Horr was the orator of the Association of the Alumni of New Salem Academy at their annual reunion in 1890, was elected President of the association in 1892, and presided and gave an address at the centennial of the academy in 1895. He was one of the in- vited guests at the unveiling of the statue of Josiah Bartlett, signer of the Declaration of Independence, at Amesbury, Massachusetts, July 4, 1888, and was one of the speakers on that occasion. In 1870 he was admitted to practice in the Federal Courts. Mr. Horr was Chairman of the School Committee of New Salem 1 859-1 860 and held the same position in Athol in 1874. He has also served as Commissioner of Insolvency and in other judicial offices. In national politics he is a Democrat and cast the only Democratic vote in Athol in 1865 for General Darius N. Couch, the Democratic Candidate for Governor. He was actively engaged as a campaign speaker for Tilden in 1876. Mr. Horr is an asso- ciate member of Hubbard V. Smith Post Grand Army of the Republic of Athol, a member of Har- vard Law School Association and the Worcester County Bar Association. In November 1853, he married Grace De la Hooke, the daughter of George Patrick Boyle of Plymouth, England, Surgeon in the British Navy. She was gifted with musical and literary talents, and contributed to the metropolitan newspapers and other publications for forty years. Selections from her ballads, carols, and hymns have been set to music by the most eminent composers of this country and England. Mrs. Horr died March 19, 1894.

"Recellus R. Horr, one of the early settlers in Monroe Iowa, was born in [Township Denmark, village Carthage, Lewis County] New York, 25 April 1837. In 1855, he left home and came to Iowa, locating in Butler County: bought 80 acres of land of L. P.Hazen who had pre-empted it for him as at that time he was too young to pre-empt land. He married 5 [7] March 1863, Miss Lena Townsend a native of Ohio. They were blessed with five children, Charles W., Arthur T., Harry W., Lena May and Irena May [twins]. Mrs. Horr died when these twins were but eight days old. He married his second wife, Mrs. George Huey [Louisa Parriott], 6 September 1878, daughter of Roby R. Parriott. The have two children, Jenny and Eva. In 1881 he bought a house and lot in Parkersburg, and now lives there. He has a farm of 320 acres which he rents. He is now living in retirement, except he speculates in real estate. pg. 637"

"Two others who arrived in 1855, were Lycurgus P. Hazen and Recellus R.Horr, both natives of the good old York State. Hazen claimed the South West quarter of section 24 and sold half to Horr, who was too young to make a land entry. Hazen was a school teacher and surveyor. He married in March 1857 to Miss Sarah J. Quinn. In 1858 removed to Kansas. He is now county surveyor of Brown County Kansas. Horr lived upon his farm until 1881, when he removed to Parkersburg, where he now lives. He still owns the land bought of Hazen and purchased adjoining land."

"An Honorable Man Passes Away.
Rucellus R. Horr, whose demise was not unexpected, after an acute illness of short duration, died at his home in this city at the age of 63. He was born in Denmark, Lewis County, New York, on April 25, 1837, and in 1855 moved to Butler County, of this state, where he has resided for forty years. During his residence there he was engaged in farming and was successful in the pursuits of life and accumulated a competency for old age. He was married to Miss Allen Townsend of Iowa Falls, in 1863, and five children were born to them. In 1878 his wife died after a long illness and left to care for his little children. The deceased was married to Mrs. Louisa Huey a year later and four daughters blessed their union, three of them are now living. The deceased moved to Rock Rapids in 1895 and his declining years were spent in comparative ease, surrounded by a happy and contented family. All through life he was regarded as an exceptional safe and reliable man, a man to be trusted and confided in, and he was never known to betray a trust. He was a conscientious Christian and lived an exemplary life. The funeral was held at the M.E. Church, Monday at 2 o'clock, Rev. Wasser, conducting the services and a large number of sorrowing friends followed the remains to its last resting-place in the Rock Rapids cemetery."
