      Obituary:
Coldwater Daily Reporter (MI) - December 8, 2010
Deceased Name: Debra A. (Smoker) Johnson
Debra A. (Smoker) Johnson, 59, of Lynden, Wash., formerly of Coldwater, died unexpectedly Monday, Dec. 6, 2010, in Shipshewana, Ind., at the home of her mother.
A service will be held Thursday, Dec. 9, 2010 at 3 p.m. at Dutcher Funeral Home in Coldwater with Pastor Dave Anderson officiating. Visitation will be held Wednesday, Dec. 8, 2010 from 2-8 p.m. at Dutcher Funeral Home.
Debi was born May 14, 1951 in Coldwater to Dale and Betty Lou (Randol) Hoard. Debi was raised in Bronson. She married Ken Smoker on April 17, 1969 and they raised three children together. They remained friends even after divorce. Debi and Kenneth Johnson were married in April of 1991 and were looking forward to their 20th wedding anniversary this spring.
Debi was a dedicated worker. She worked at Harding's Market in Sturgis for 10 years. She then found her true gift, which was working with children. Debi was an administrative assistant at Coldwater High School and Lakeland Elementary for 20 years. Until her retirement in 2006, she was a kind and generous spirit in the office for many children, especially those who were lonely, ill or afraid. She could bring out a smile in all of them and was always finding warm coats and clothes for those who were in need.
After retirement, Debi and Ken Johnson moved to Lynden, Wash., where she became active in the Lion's Club, volunteered at the Senior Center and joined Christ the King Church. She still found time to help those who were struggling. She tended her beautiful garden and remained an avid crafter. She loved making cards and mementos for her grandchildren. She was immensely proud of her three children. She adored her grandchildren and loved spending time with them. Debi was always kind, sweet, a very giving and caring person in everything that she did. If you ever walked the halls of Coldwater High or Lakeland Elementary School, then perhaps you remember her kind and gentle spirit and how much she felt you were all her family.
Debi is survived by her husband Ken Johnson, her mother and step-father Betty and John Malone of Shipshewana, Ind., her son Shawn Smoker of Los Angeles, Calif., her daughters Nikki (David) Schmaltz of Defiance, Ohio and Shannon (Jeff) Blair of Raleigh, N.C., her step-children Chad (Michelle) Johnson of New York, N.Y., Jessica (Edward) Bloom of Bellingham, Wash. and Jacquelyn (Daniel) Irwin of Vermillion, S.D., her sisters Linda (Jim) Martin of Kalamazoo, Dawn Hicks of Coldwater and Heidi (Isaac) Fruchey of Baltimore, Md., grandchildren Chandler and Dalton Schmaltz, Vivian, Owen and Isaac Bloom, Cole and Avery Johnson and many very special nieces and nephews including Darcie Mitchell.
She was preceded in death by her father Dale Hoard.
Memorials may be directed to the Debi Johnson Clothing Fund for Children.
