L. Douglas Smith age 70, well known former Dansville Main Street Merchant, passed away late Thursday evening August 26, 1999, in Lehigh Acres Florida following a long illness.
Doug was born in N. Hornell on August 24, 1929, a son of the late Leonard G. and Ruth L. Bornt Smith. On February 10, 1973, he was married to Sylvia Zimmer Smith who survives. He was predeceased by his first wife Onnalee Horr Smith in 1965, a step-daughter Sharlene Hartman, a step-son Jeff Horr and a sister Judith Marlene Smith.
Doug owned and operated Smith's Market on Main St., in Dansville until his retirement in 1982 after 35 years of business.
A US Navy veteran during the Korean Conflict and a former Trustee of the Dansville Village Board, the former Dansville Board of Trade, the Brae Burns Men's Bowling league. He was a life member of the Daniel Goho Post # 87 of the American Legion, a member of the Protectives Company # 1 of the Dansville Fire Dept., the Dansville Ambulance Corps., Phoenix Lodge # 115 of the F & AM and the Dansville Presbyterian Church.
Surviving in addition to his devoted wife Sylvia, are a son and daughter-in law Joseph (Justina) Smith, of Winter Springs, FL, a son Eric L. Vecellio of Ocala, FL. Four grandchildren Janelle and David Smith and Bradly and Neal Vecellio A sister Carol Anne Brown of Rochester, Two brothers David W. Smith of Rochester and Tim D. Smith of Livonia, A step daughter, Sharon (Bill) Dixon of Dansville. Several nieces, nephews and cousins.
Friends may call Saturday, Sept. 4 th beginning at 10:00 AM in the McKee Parlor of the Dansville Presbyterian Church followed by a memorial service in the Church at 11:00 AM. Interment with full military honors will be in Greenmount Cemetery, Dansville.
