      Leigh E. Hoar Jr., 61, of Stanley Road died Sunday of cancer at his home.
      He was born in Westbrook, a son of Leigh E. and Marion James Hoar Sr. He was a 1955 graduate of Deering High School, graduated from the University of Maine at Orono in 1963 with a degree in forestry and received his master's degree in 1965.
      Mr. Hoar served in the Marines from 1955-1958.
      He was employed as a park ranger at Shenandoah National Park after college. Since 1974 he had worked as a forest engineer for the state Bureau of Public Lands.
      While working for the bureau, he was supervisor of dam construction at Churchill and was the first supervisor of the Allagash Wilderness Waterway.
      Mr. Hoar had been a member of the Winthrop Zoning Board of Appeals since 1992 and was a member of Maine State Employees Association.
      He was an avid outdoorsman.
      Surviving are his mother of Lewiston; a son, Leigh Eric III of Ashland; two daughters, Elizabeth April Hoar of Beaverton, Ore., and Mrs. Andrew (Rebecca) Grosvenor Haughley of Winthrop; two brothers, Scott and Edward; his sisters, Vivian, Joanna, Rachel and Elaine and three grandchildren.
      At his request there will be no public funeral service. Arrangements are by Roberts Funeral Home, 26 Bowdoin St.
