KENNETH N. WHEATON
GRAND LAKE STREAM - Kenneth N. Wheaton, 86, died March 3, 2003, at a Calais hospital. He was born in Waite Jan. 10, 1917, the son of Joseph and Alice (Neal) Wheaton. Kenneth was a registered Maine guide and a member of the Grand Lake Stream Historical Society. He was a master canoe builder whose design is the bench mark for the Grand Lake canoes. He was well recognized for his craftsmanship and took great pride in his art. He was a World War II veteran and recipient of the Purple Heart. Kenneth served in Normandy, Northern France, Rhineland and Belgium. He and his wife, Barbara, owned and operated the Pine Tree Store in Grand Lake Stream for many years. Surviving are his wife, Barbara Wheaton; one son, Christopher Wheaton, both of Grand Lake Stream; one daughter, Susan Hurd of North New Portland; three grandchildren, Chad and Kenneth Barton and Neil Wheaton; several nieces and nephews. Graveside services will be held in the spring, at the Grand Lake Stream Cemetery, with Rev. Dana Kadey officiating. Friends may make donations in his memory to the Grand Lake Stream Guides Association or Grand Lake Stream Historical Society. Funeral arrangements are by the Scott-Wilson Funeral Home, Calais.
