Fireman Dies On Way To Fire Here. Norman Schmalzried, 64, of 914 Lindell, died of a heart attack yesterday while driving the city's second fire truck to a two alarm fire at the William T. West house at 1630 Clarion Ave, and the truck crashed into parked cars at the Pierce Chrysler-Plymouth lot on W. Mitchell St.
Firemen To Attend Mr. Schmalzried Rites in Uniform. Services will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday at the First Methodist Church for Norman Schmalzried, 64, who died yesterday. Rev. Ralph Witmer will be in charge of services and burial will be in Carp Lake Cemetery near Levering. Petoskey fireman will attend the services in uniform in a body. He was born Aug. 6, 1900 in Levering. He was married to Evelyn Chappel on Aug. 20, 1930 in Pellston and they moved to Petoskey that same year. He worked for the Emmet County Road Commission between Petoskey and Levering for 32 years and was shop foreman at Petoskey for the past several years. He was a member of the Methodist Church and of the official board and had been a long-time trustee; he was a member of the IOOF here for 46 years and was twice its noble grand here and once at Levering and had remained active; he was a charter member of the Honarary Alumni of North Central Michigan College; he was a member of the Petoskey Volunteer Fire Department since 1942. Surviving are his wife; a daughter, Mrs. Alan (Joyce) Cudworth of Lansing; a granddaughter; his mother, Mrs. Catherine Schmalzried of Levering; three sisters, Mrs. Forrest (Cora) Luesing of Levering, Mrs. Lela Hiar of Levering and Mrs. Lorin (Hazel) Burch of Traverse City; two brothers, Frank and Leon of Levering. The body is at the Stone Funeral Home where friends may call. The family has suggested that those wishing to honor the memory of Mr. Schmalzried may do so by contributing to the Methodist Memorial Fund.
