On April 25, 1832, the Plymouth County Probate Court judged Edward Durfee, of Middleboro, Plymouth County, MA, to be insane. His next of kin was his son Edward. He owned a blacksmith shop in Middleboro, Plymouth County, MA, and Job Hoar was named as guardian. Plymouth County Probate Record 6909. He apparently recovered or at least improved for a time as he was listed with his family in 1840 and 1850.

On July 1, 1854, Edward B. Durfee, of Rochester, Plymouth County, MA, was judged incompetent by the Plymouth Court and Nathan H. Barstow was appointed guardian.
When the U. S. 1860 census of Providence, Providence County, RI, was taken Edward B. Durfee 52 (should be 62), occupation unknown, born RI, was an inmate at the Butler Asylum for the insane.
Edward B. Durfee died " on or about January 15, 1864, he had a wife Sally, deceased at the time of his death and her son Edward, of Mattapoisett, MA, being next of kin, others unknown ". Plymouth Court Case 6908.
