At age 18 he went to Massachusetts and engaged in farming. He began a long connection to railroad interests in 1849 and in 1851 was engaged as a fireman on the Atlantic and St. Lawrence railroad. From 1853 he changed residence to Gorham and ran trains between Gorham and Paris, Me. He married Julia Horr of Norway Me., daughter of Nathan and Amelia [Wood] Horr, on September 19, 1851. Their children are Sarah A., Emma A., George Edwin.
