She was born Feb. 6, 1945, on Peaks Island, the daughter of Meldeau and Gladys (Hoar) Whitton. She grew up on Peaks Island and attended schools there and also attended Portland High School. As a child and young adult she was active with the Brackett Memorial Methodist Church on Peaks Island and played the organ for the church. Cheryl was active with scouting and served as a girl scout troop leader and a cub scout den mother.
