Blanche Bockstoce Hoar, 82, of Simsbury, died on Sunday, (September 21, 2003) of congestive heart failure. She was the daughter of the late Blanche Hutton and Harry F. Bockstoce of Pittsburgh, PA and the sister of the late Clifton M. Bockstoce of West Hartford. She attended Smith College and The Hartford Art School, where she was the third student to be awarded a full three- year scholarship in the school's history. A teacher of both Studio Art and History of Art for over 40 years, she began her career as an instructor at Smith College. She became Head of the Art Department at The Ethel Walker School, where she taught for 27 years and was known to all of her students as "Miss B." In 1974, she moved to the Hotchkiss School in Lakeville, as Chairman of the Art Department when the school became co-educational. At Hotchkiss, she was awarded the Marie S. Tinker Chair becoming the first woman to occupy an endowed teaching position there. She was also appointed to the first six-member Advanced Placement Examining Committee in History of Art, which was chaired by Dr. H.W. Janson. Following her retirement, she became a licensed Episcopal Eucharistic lay minister and was a volunteer lay chaplain in the newly formed hospice program at the McLean Home in Simsbury. Her marriage to John Hoar, Jr. ended in divorce. She is survived by her son, William P.H. Hoar; and grandchildren, William and Eliza Hoar, all of New York City, NY. A memorial service will be held on November 8, at 3 p.m. in the Ethel Walker School Chapel. In lieu of flowers, donations in her memory should be sent to either The Hartford Art School in West Hartford or the Simsbury Volunteer Ambulance Association.
