      Post-Standard, The (Syracuse, NY) - January 8, 2010
Deceased Name: Wilma Marie Rankin Fessenden
      December 29, 2009
Wilma Marie Rankin Fessenden of Tully, NY died peacefully surrounded by loved ones on December 29, 2009. She was 75, and had lived with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis for two and a half years.
Wilma was born on April 12, 1934 in Batavia, New York, to Melissa Speidel and Alex Rankin. She was valedictorian of her class at Batavia High School and graduated from Antioch College in June 1955 with a degree in psychology. After spending the summer hitchhiking across Europe with her college friend Phyllis Sato, she started grad school at the University of Buffalo in January, 1956. It was there she met her husband, Patrick Fessenden. They married on September 1, 1956, in Ithaca, New York and moved to Tully in 1961.
Wilma worked at the Tully Free Library from 1963 to 1969, and as school librarian at Tully Elementary School from 1969 until her retirement in 1992. She completed her Masters in Library Science at Syracuse University in 1971. Wilma was a master storyteller and she delighted young and old with her wide variety of character voices.
Wilma was a tour de force in the Tully community. Her library was the heart and soul of the elementary school. She led fundraising efforts to remodel the public library and build a new playground at the school. She sang and played hand bells in the choirs at Tully United Community Church.
Wilma and Patrick traveled widely in their retirement years. They helped on international aid projects in Ireland, Spain and Jamaica, and studied natural history in New Zealand, Australia, and Central and South America. In between trips they could be found spending quality time with their grandsons in Maryland and New Hampshire.
Wilma was a lover of life who touched hearts and inspired people everywhere she went. Her grace and humor were infectious. We loved her because she listened to us, and was fully present with us, and gave generously straight from her heart.
Wilma is survived by her husband, Patrick; her sister, Francis Horr of Mt. Morris, New York; her brother, Malcolm Rankin of Bradford, Pennsylvania; her daughters, Muffin McAfee of Sparks, Maryland, Lynne Fessenden of Eugene, Oregon, and Kathryn Fessenden of Kensington, New Hampshire, and four grandsons.
A Celebration of Life service is being planned for early July in Tully, NY.
