      author of books on ancient and modern Wiltshire. A banker, partner in the bank +
      at Fleet St, London. Succeeded his father as 2nd baronet. He succeeded to the +
      estate of Stourton from his maternal grandfather Henry HOARE. F.R.S., F.S.A. In +
      DA96,p.598.5/1, Colt Hoare is described as deeply unhappy following the death +
      of his wife and his grandfather (from whom he inherited Stourhead) in 1785, so +
      that he embarked on a six year Grand Tour lasting until 1791 during which he +
      made many purchases. On his return, he devoted himself to extending and +
      developing Stourhead, building up the collections of art and books, and +
      developing antiquarian interests involving both archaeology and authorship. +
      DBAA; a rather euphoric review of some of his publications. DNBX; provides a +
      short biography. BLC; lists numerous publications by Richard Colt HOARE.
