      [[The following census information was compiled and contributed by Joyce S.

      Philip Hoar; no birth, death, or burial records, had property by 1817, Pelham Tax Valuations. Probably had to be 21 to own property so, born before 1796 and died after 1851. Three daughters, born 1825, 1829 and 1831. Owned sider (cider) mill in 1837.
      His mother and a brother died in 1838, a brother and a sister died in 1839, wife died in 1840, father died in 1841 a brother died in 1846, and a sister in 1848. (=8 deaths, w/o nieces & nephews) On March 17, 1845 he was hospitalized in the Worcester Insane Asylum, In 1848 he was living with Samuel Shaw for 4 months, returning in 1848 to Worcester Insane Asylum. He ran away and was returned in 1848. Brother William hung himself two weeks after Philip was re-hospitalized in 1848. The 1849 and 1851 Pelham's financial records indicate that Pelham was paying for his support at Battleboro Asylum, Vermont (Aka: The Brattleboro Retreat). Philip was abt 27 yrs older than his yougest sibling, William. (1832 Worcester Insane Asylum, the first in Massachusetts, opened.)JVS

      1830 census shows wife and two females under age 5 and female 70 to 80 yrs of age. Living in next household to John Hoar. "Philip, married Harriet Peirce (?)" according to Miss Abiah Peirce and listed with the children of Uncle John Hoar. Mentioned in John Cowan's memorandum book four times. Wife's death mentioned in John Cowan's book. Is listed as child of John & Abigail by Miss Abiah Peirce, daughter of Rachel Hoar-Peirce.

      I have found many age mistakes in this 1840 census. I believe this was another one.

      Everyone there is simply listed as "Insane".
